Daniel Craig, who has played spymaster James Bond in the previous five Bond films, has stated that he is opposed to the concept of hiring a woman to play the secret agent, a character created by novelist Ian Fleming in the 1950s as a British man. Craig, who is preparing to make his farewell appearance as James Bond in No Time To Die, told Radio Times magazine that he sees no reason to change a character solely to meet diversity goals.
When questioned if the next James Bond should be more “diverse,” Craig suggested that instead of revamping Bond, they create a new film series in which a woman plays a comparable role.
“The answer to that is very simple,” Craig answered. “There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, for a woman?”
George Lazenby, who took over as James Bond for one film when Sean Connery stepped down, agrees with current Bond actor Daniel Craig that James Bond should not be played by a woman. Before Roger Moore’s reign in the 1970s and 1980s, Lazenby played the 00 agent in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. According to TMZ, Lazenby believes Daniel Craig is correct that Bond will continue to be a masculine figure. He did, however, mention that the post might be up for grabs in the future.
Back in 2018, the franchise’s producer Barbara Broccoli insisted that Bond would “probably” never be played by a woman. “Bond is male. He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male,” Broccoli said at the time. “And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.”
