The Crunchyroll Anime Awards are back and voting is currently underway. Many fans are surprised to see the categories and which anime are up for the running. The categories change every year, but there are many that are consistent, such as Best Anime and Best Score. Similar to last year, Crunchyroll has Best Antagonist for fans to vote on. There are six contenders for the running, all from a variety of shows. Many fans were surprised to see the different options, as there are some obvious contenders and some that flew under the radar.
Rest assured, many fans are more comfortable with the current selection for Best Antagonist since there’s no obvious choice, unlike the previous year’s awards. When Ryomen Sukuna was running for Best Antagonist of 2020, it was obvious that he was going to win. However, that’s not the case for 2021, leaving many fans in suspense as they hope their favorite antagonist will get the recognition they deserve.
6 Yano Speaks In Rap (Odd Taxi)
Odd Taxi is considered one of those underrated gems of the past year. Many fans are probably questioning what the show is about, and who Yano even is. What makes Yano interesting is that he primarily seems to speak in rap when communicating. The most shocking thing about Yano is that he’s not even really an animal.
Odd Taxi‘s biggest plot twist is revealed near the end of the series: Odd Taxi‘s protagonist, Hiroshi Odokawa, has been hallucinating people as animals since his childhood. Such a plot twist made many fans sympathize with Yano, despite him being a villain and a yakuza thug.
5 Ainosuke Shindo Steals The Show (SK8 The Infinity)
SK8 The Infinity is another show that passed under many anime fans’ radars. The show is under the sports genre since it focuses on skating, but those that have watched it found it very compelling and interesting. The animation is clean and the story often gets fans emotional.
Ainosuke Shindo, also known as Adam, is an interesting character since he lives a double life as both a skater and a politician. He doesn’t hold back when he skates and is extremely ruthless. He doesn’t even care if his opponents get injured. He’s also very confident in himself and in his abilities, always making a grand entrance for himself to steal everyone’s attention.
4 Tetta Kisaki Wants to Be the Best (Tokyo Revengers)
Tokyo Revengers is a time-traveling series that was one of the bigger anime in 2021. Unfortunately for many fans, the anime isn’t in the running for anime of the year. Luckily enough, the antagonist of this show is getting recognition. Kisaki definitely fits the definition of the word “villain.” He’s a ruthless person who only cares for himself.
He doesn’t care or listen to higher-ups and even intimidates them with fear. His goal in life is to become the most powerful criminal in Tokyo and his unnerving personality plays a huge role in achieving this goal. Of course, Kisaki doesn’t lead just through fear. He also has a level of charm, winning people over willingly to serve under him.
3 Tomura Shigaraki Finally Proves His Worth (My Hero Academia)
Tomura Shigaraki in the current season of My Hero Academia has finally proven himself not only as a villain to be feared, but also to be respected. Fans who originally felt underwhelmed by Shigaraki in previous seasons now respect him and are more intrigued. Shigaraki has finally come out of his shell, becoming far more powerful than he ever was with his Quirk. He also was able to triumph over the Meta Liberation Army.
Shigaraki in the most recent season has shown that he’s capable as a leader that can rule with fear. Of course, he still keeps his promises and cares for the subordinates that have been working with him since the beginning. Ultimately, Shigaraki is only beginning to pave the way to showing why he’s worthy of being the main antagonist in My Hero Academia.
2 Echidna Is the Definition of Greed (Re: Zero)
Many fans were intrigued by Echidna. Some were wondering if she really was an antagonist in Re: Zero, as she is too playful and sometimes even helpful to the main character, Subaru. She’s calm in demeanor, but as the story progresses, both audiences and Subaru slowly begin to see Echidna’s two-faced nature.
Many still struggle to see her as an antagonist, however, as she merely wanted to help Subaru in return for learning more about his “Return By Death” ability. Echidna is also known as the Witch of Greed, and it’s interesting for fans to see how she fits the role, always interested and hungry for more information. She’s a very curious character but her two-sided personality can’t be overlooked. She always attempts to get what she wants.
1 Eren Jaeger Gets His Revenge (Attack On Titan)
As a protagonist-turned-antagonist, Eren Jaeger is not only running for Best Antagonist; he’s also in the running for Best Protagonist. Many fans were surprised to see him in both categories of the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, as it’s been unheard of before the current slots. There is a truth to Eren being both the antagonist and protagonist of Attack on Titan.
Fans are horrified to see as he gets revenge on Marley and even loses the trust of his friends, as he concealed a secret plan throughout the story. But in the end, Attack on Titan is Eren’s story and fans can see how Eren became the antagonist of the story. Everything he does is to protect his friends and fellow citizens. Despite all the horrible things he did, fans sympathize with him and understand why he wants revenge on Marley.
