Crossover Gives Two Indie Comics Icons Their Strangest Case Ever

[ad_1]

As a very special issue of Image Comics’ Crossover blends real-world sensibilities, two fan-favorite indie comics heroes return.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Crossover #7, by Chip Zdarsky, Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Dee Cunniffe and John J. Hill, on sale now.

If there’s one thing that’s been abundantly clear about the Image Comics ongoing series Crossover, it’s that the Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw title has more than lived up to its title and overarching premise. True to its name, Crossover has brought in a whole host of previously established comic book characters from a myriad of properties together as the worlds of fiction explosively collide with reality. And in a very special issue of the series, two fan-favorite characters from Powers have been tasked with protecting real-world comic book creator Chip Zdarsky, their most bizarre assignment to date.

With the entire comic book industry coming under fire when comic book properties invaded the real-world over the skies of Denver, comic book creators were targeted by those who held them responsible for the subsequent devastation, as the Colorado city was caught in the middle of the fictional characters’ never-ending battle. Many familiar creators were forced to go into hiding, and a fictionalized Brian K. Vaughan evidently being killed for being such a prominent voice in the medium. Among the characters that have eluded violent attention since the comic book invasion is Chip Zdarsky.

Chip has since taken on a pseudonym and become a short-order cook in a dingy diner in a remote location within his native Canada. Suspecting that he’s being hunted, Chip finds himself face to face with the comic book iteration he created of himself as a self-insert character in his and Matt Fraction’s acclaimed Image Comics series Sex Criminals.

And as Chip’s comic book doppelgänger is lethally tracked down by a shadowy figure interested in comic book creators, the Eisner Award-winning creator decides to turn to help from those that he would trust with his life: Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, the protagonists of the award-winning comic book series Powers.

Crossover Powers Christian Walker Deena Pilgrim

Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming in 2000, Christian and Deena are two homicide detectives working for the Chicago Police Department. Years before the start of the series, Christian defended the city as the superhero Diamond before eventually losing his powers before turning to investigate metahuman crime as a civilian. The idea of crossovers and self-aware commentary on the comic book industry was a defining feature in Powers, with characters like Madman and Savage Dragon briefly appearing in the title, along with real-life comic book creator Warren Ellis.

Now ostensibly in the real world, Christian and Deena are tasked with investigating the murder of a different fictional character, albeit one that is a proxy for an actual human being in beleaguered comic book creator Chip Zdarsky. The identity of the comic book Chip’s killer remains a mystery, meaning that no other comic creator is safe on the meantime. Christian and Deena are a bit out of their element, but they certainly have past experience with this kind of fourth-wall-breaking incident. And with familiar faces like Savage Dragon and Madman already introduced into Crossover, Christian and Deena might be teaming up with characters they’ve encountered in the past.
