Eden Perkins describes what it was like playing Radical Ed on Netflix’s live-action remake of Cowboy Bebop.
With Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop finally out, newcomer Eden Perkins dishes on bringing fan-favorite character Radical Ed to life in live-action.
Perkins spoke to ComicBook.com about playing the beloved character, albeit briefly, on the new series, and how special the experience was. “Ed is such an amazing character,” they said. “She’s just so incredibly lively, and she just brings energy wherever she goes. Looking at all the scenes from the anime of Ed, she’s just so cool. She’s an amazing character, and I really relate to her actually and it was so, so incredibly exciting being cast as her.”
While early marketing for the show focused heavily on the main trio of Spike, Jet, and Faye, played by John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, and Daniella Pineda, respectively, many fans were upset that the show didn’t seem to feature Ed. Along with the Corgi Ein, Ed completes the eventual quintet of the iconic anime, but it seemed the character might not arrive until a possible Season 2. But with the show now available to stream, Perkins can finally discuss their one-scene role and what the future might hold.
“I’m so excited about people getting to know Ed, she’s just such a cool character,” Perkins said. “Even though there’s only one scene, she packs a punch of personality, and I think that’s so cool. I’m very excited for people to get to know Ed in the future, and see what she’s like.”
The live-action Cowboy Bebop has had a mixed reception from critics, with many finding it an unnecessary adaptation that simply remakes the original minus much of its charm and appeal. Fans have similarly been split, with many praising the performances but questioning the point of the show. But all involved, including Perkins, are clearly fans of the anime.
“One of my favorite Ed moments from the anime is definitely when there’s a bounty on the Bebop, and he’s being mean to Ein and Ed just comes down, bonks him on the head and starts biting him. It’s truly amazing.” Perkins said. “Getting into costume for the first time, Ed’s so cool. I love her costume so much. It’s very free and movable I suppose, which suits Ed very much. And the wig. The wig is so cool. It’s so spiky and I desperately want to touch it, but I don’t cus otherwise I would mess it up… it’s such a cool costume.”
Like the rest of the show, fans seem to have conflicting feelings about the live-action Ed. While many are excited for the nonbinary actor to bring the character to life, others find the addition similar to the rest of the series: far more cartoonish than the animated source material.
Given the complicated reaction to the show, it’s not clear if Cowboy Bebop will be renewed, but Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
