Could Starship Troopers’ Arachnids Defeat Star Trek’s Borg?

Star Trek’s Borg and Starship Troopers’ Arachnids are totally different. However, which of the two species would win isn’t so obvious.

At first glance, the Star Trek universe and Starship Troopers films might seem completely different, but both titles do share a few similarities. Each franchise features a futuristic version of Earth and their respective associations, the United Federation of Planets and the United Citizen Federation. Still, they also have another element in common that is comparable and poles apart simultaneously.

While both the USS Enterprise and the Fleet crew have their main nemeses, the Borg and Arachnids, these two separate groups of unfeeling cybernetic humanoids and giant vicious insects are worlds apart in their intent and methods of dealing with other species. For one, the Borg are in an eternal pursuit of perfection, aiming to assimilate as many sentient species and their technologies and knowledge as possible. In contrast, Arachnids wish to conquer and colonize the galaxy, determined to wipe out the human race and all other threats by any means necessary.

Nevertheless, each possesses a symbiotic hive mind that allows them to communicate with one another telepathically. This unseen network that connects both species makes them a massive problem for their enemies. Although the Collective and the Bugs are incredibly formidable opponents for those unfortunate enough to cross their colonies, they are not without their fair share of weaknesses. Interestingly, a post on Quora raises a fascinating question about both species: whether or not the Arachnids from Starship Troopers could actually stand a chance against the Borg from Star Trek.

The scenario is this: “The Borg find a planet in the Delta Quadrant that is inhabited only by Arachnids, they try to assimilate the Bugs because they have certain uses and would add to their perfection, the Arachnids fight back and kill countless Drones on the surface and attack Borg ships and worlds from afar, who wins?” If numbers compare the two species, the Archies would surely win because they birth endless spores that they hurl into space. While the Borg has trillions of Drones that they can throw at their opponents, they will have to keep assimilating species to generate their numbers. In contrast, the Arachnids can do so internally through their natural reproductive process.

Additionally, sub-species of the Arachnids called Tanker Bugs can shoot a corrosive stream of flammable liquid from their heads to chemically burn and disintegrate their foes. Plasma Bugs, another equally hostile sub-species, can even launch a Bug Meteor using plasma weaponry from Klandathu across the galaxy that can destroy entire cities, as they did with Buenos Aires, Argentina, though some theories suggest otherwise. Additionally, the Arachnids have evolved throughout millions of years, making their species extremely adept at survival under impossible odds.

Despite their many violent roles, the Bugs are no match against the assimilation tactics of the Collective, as it’s how the Borg reign supreme over all of their victims. If they were to find a Brain Bug and assimilate it into the Collective, the Arachnids would undoubtedly lose the war because Brain Bugs act as the Arachnid’ss sole control center. Although they are brilliant and command their entire colonies to do their bidding, Brain Bugs are unfortunately almost entirely defenseless. They are so large that they are unable to travel without assistance from Chariot Bugs. Indeed, the only fail-safe they have against their enemies is that they can screech so loud that it will explode a person’s head, so perhaps the Borg would be dead in their tracks before they can even approach a Brain Bug. Still, if a human being can manage to snare one with a net, the Collective can, too. Plus, the Borg can use their transporters to materialize wherever they please, unlike Johnny Rico and the mobile infantry, which had to go through hell and back just to capture one.

Furthermore, though the Borg might not be able to penetrate specific sub-species of Arachnid’s exoskeleton with their tubes to release their nanobots, they can assuredly do so to the Brain Bugs as parts of their bodies appear slug-like and soft. The Borg can also nuke planets full of Arachnid colonies without ever leaving orbit, decimating their population from the far reaches of space. The Borg’s spacecraft, a Cube, is also very fast and highly maneuverable. Logically, it could easily avoid a projectile deployed by a Plasma Bug because their Impulse Engine-powered ships go faster than the speed of light.

Nonetheless, the question seems to be a moot point, as the Borg only seeks out species that they believe will help fulfill their goal of perfection. If they deem a target unqualified in their biology, technological advancements or intelligence, the Collective will not assimilate them because they are unworthy or undesirable. So, in the end, the actual outcome of this interstellar squirmish relies on whether or not these two species would logically encounter each other in battle. The Arachnids from Starship Troopers are primarily mindless and driven by aggression. They do not contribute; they do not make better — they only breed, take and destroy. Therefore, the Borg would most likely have no use for them at all and avoid their kind altogether. Still, if they were half as bright as they believe themselves to be, the Collective would exterminate the entire population of Arachnids, lest they risk falling to a species deemed as lesser.
