Savage Avengers #1 features not only Conan the Barbarian, but a host of heroes including Anti-Venom, Weapon H and Elektra up against Deathlok.
The deadliest group of Avengers returns this May in a new relaunch of Savage Avengers, featuring a motley selection of unorthodox heroes and anti-heroes led by Conan the Barbarian.
Written by David Pepose (Spencer & Locke, Going to the Chapel) and penciled by Carlos Magno (Avengers: Mech Strike, Kang the Conqueror), this latest incarnation of Savage Avengers features Elektra in her guise as Daredevil, Anti-Venom, Weapon H, Black Knight, and Cloak & Dagger. This unusual crew will blaze across Conan’s home turf of the Hyborian Age as the dangerous assassin Deathlok stays hot on their trail. The cover of Issue #1 — by Leinil Francis Yu and Sunny Gho — as well as a promotional image by Giuseppe Camuncoli and David Curiel offer a look at the team, promising that they are an “all-new, all-different” group, but just as uncompromising as the last.
“Outgunned and outmatched, Conan must turn to an unlikely group of loners, berserkers and killers if he hopes to survive the night — but can these Savage Avengers defy Deathlok’s murderous manhunt, or will they become the next targets in the crosshairs of tomorrow?” Marvel’s official synopsis of the series reads.
Magno said that working on the book was an explosive experience akin to “dealing with nitroglycerin.” Pepose, who makes his Marvel debut with Savage Avengers, echoed this feeling, saying its vibe was “like getting drafted to the Yankees and then being told you also get to play for the Rangers on the weekend.”
“Not only do I get to write Conan the Barbarian, one of the most iconic characters in sword and sorcery, but I get to throw him into the wildest adventures imaginable alongside a brand-new crew of Marvel fan-favorites!” Pepose said. “Teaming up Conan with Daredevil, Anti-Venom, Weapon H, Black Knight, and Cloak and Dagger allows so much personality and potential to this series, and artist Carlos Magno delivers showstopper after showstopper as he brings these characters to life — I can’t wait for readers to see what sparks fly when Conan and company are pitted against the most dangerous Deathlok of them all. Get ready to experience an epic battle of Cyborg versus Cimmerian, because this May, only the Savage will survive…”
The previous Savage Avengers series kicked off in 2019, focusing on Conan’s adventures after he was pulled into the mainstream Marvel universe’s Savage Land. Featuring appearances from the likes of the Punisher, Venom, Wolverine and Doctor Voodoo, the series ran for 28 issues before coming to an end in 2021, following a climatic battle against Conan’s archnemesis Kulan Gath.
Savage Avengers #1 goes on sale May 4 from Marvel.
