Comics Crowdfunding Round-Up: TIME SCHMUCKS, BLOODY KNUCKLE, and 3 more campaigns we love

[ad_1]

Welcome to this week’s Comics Crowdfunding Round-Up! Before we get into the projects we’re following this week, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge Josh HilgenbergThe Beat‘s outgoing crowdfunding consigliere, who has moved on from The Beat to bigger and better things for the time being. Thank you for steering this column for the past year-plus, Josh — you will be sorely missed.

Enough sentimentality. Let’s get to the good stuff: five projects we love for the week!

Decay Issue 1: A Supernatural Thriller

Creators: Anthony Stokes (writer), Marc Oliver (artist), Joni Hagg (letterer)
Goal: $2,000
End Date: September 17th, 2021
Goodies: Standard and variant covers ($10 & $15, respectively), a CD mixtape ($40), jewelry and stickers ($60), and more

A gritty revenge tale with a gut punch ending.

I’m not much for stories with supernatural elements, but this one sounds too intriguing to pass up. Set in New Orleans, the book follows a young man who goes to extreme lengths to exact revenge on the person who killed his best friend. The art looks great and the themes of the book sound fascinating.

Time Schmucks Issue 2

Creators: Jack Fitzsimmons (writer), Tom Hoskisson (artist), Rebecca McConnell (colorist)
Goal: $7,200
End Date: September 30th, 2021
Goodies: Standard cover ($5), a trio of Early Bird variants ($8 each), pins and stickers ($25), a pint glass ($40), and more

The second installment of Time Schmucks! Follow the continued adventures of Lisa and Johnny lost in 1876 Philadelphia!

I’m a sucker for time travel stories, and I have to imagine they’re even more entertaining when the leads are terrible people. This campaign will go towards printing the second issue of the 6-part Time Schmucks series, and towards production of the final four issues of the series.

Bloody Knuckle

Creators: Devon Ellis (creator), Obsidian Press (publisher)
Goal: $5,000
End Date: September 16th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and print editions ($10 and $20, respectively), and “Honorary Mention” in all future issues of the first volume of the series ($50)

Obsidian Comics is creating Manga/Comics featuring P.O.C, in an effort to establish a proper representation via amazing stories!

There’s not a lot of bells and whistles on offer as rewards with this campaign, which means its success rests solely on the quality of the comic. Thankfully the preview of the comic and character profiles in the campaign page look great, and the stated mission for Obsidian Press is definitely one worth supporting.

Bullet: 40 pg Superhero/Romance for COMIC FANS of all kinds!

Creators: Jordan Alsaqa (writer), Kath Lobo (artist), Lucas Gattoni (letterer), Randy Stone/Altruist Comics (publisher)
Goal: US $2,154/CA $2,720
End Date: September 16th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and print editions ($5 and $10, respectively), trading cards ($14), a silver metallic variant edition limited to 100 copies ($40), commissioned art (starting at $56), and more

This Silver Age origin of the super speedster explores Dale DeSouza’s early days fighting crime & falling for the love of his life, Jo.

Another thing I’m a sucker for besides time travel is speedster stories, and this one sounds like a lot of fun. The issue is forty pages, and you can read almost half of it right now with a 17-page preview available through the campaign.

BLACK

Creators: Tobias Taitt (writer), Anthony Smith (artist/designer), Soaring Penguin Press (publisher)
Goal: £3,000/about US $4,109
End Date: September 16th, 2021
Goodies: Digital, softcover, and hardcover editions ($10, $24, and $42, respectively), prints ($62), original art ($207), and more

A powerful autobiographical graphic novel following a second-generation Windrush-descendent through life in social care in the 1970s.

This 128-page graphic novel tells the story of writer Tobias Taitt’s childhood in black and white. Taitt’s story sounds fascinating, and Smith’s artwork in the preview pages on the campaign page looks incredible. Soaring Penguin Press projects are usually pretty interesting bets, and this looks no different.
