Comics Crowdfunding Round-Up: THIRTY-THREE, SLICE OF LIFE, MEANWHILE…, and more

[ad_1]

Welcome back to The Beat’s comics crowdfunding round-up! After a week off we’re back with a look at five projects worth your time and money. This week’s round-up includes new twists on familiar superhero tropes, an indie anthology by established and up-and-coming creators, and much more. Check it out!

Thirty-Three

Creators: Juan Ponce (Writer), Gavin Guidry (Artist), Marco Finnegan (Artist), Michael Fisher (Colorist), Ellie Wright (Colorist), Gabriela Downie (Letterer), Ariana Maher (Letterer), Brittany Matter (Editor)
Goal: $12,000
End Date: November 19th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies of the book, and physical copies with variant covers by Will Rosado and Bex Glendining

A middle-aged office drone–and his dysfunctional family–are confronted by his past: a league of genetically enhanced super assassins.

A road trip book with assassins in it sounds right up my alley. The creators on this project are all extremely talented, and the eleven preview pages included on the campaign page look great. Don’t be surprised if and when this book ends up with a non-Kickstarter publisher.

Meanwhile… #11: The best anthology you’ve never heard of

Creators: Gary Spencer Millidge, Roger Langridge, Sarah Gordon, Ginny Skinner, Mulele Jarvis, Pierre Emmanuel, Oisin Roche, Pedro Gomes, Francis Deshamais, Jack Redmond & Conor Spielberg, Kari Sihvonen and Robert Stevenson (Cartoonists), Soaring Penguin Press (Publisher)
Goal: £4,000/~$5,533
End Date: October 29th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and print editions of the 136-page book, past installments in the Meanwhile… series, subscriptions to future issues, and Zoom sessions with the book’s editors/publishers

The 11th volume of our flagship anthology, now running 136 pages.

Soaring Penguin Press has a fairly consistent track record for quality offerings, and the latest issue of their Meanwhile… anthology appears to be no exception. The stories on offer look to be a nice mix of established talent and new voices, which makes this another easy project to toss some money towards.

Slice of Life #1 – Queer WEBTOON with an Anime Twist

Creators: Kat Calamia (Co-creator/co-writer), Phil Falco (Co-creator/co-writer), Valeria Peri (Artist), Taylor Esposito (Letterer), Brant Fowler (Graphic Designer), Garth Mathams (Webtoon Letterer)
Goal: $10,000
End Date: November 18th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies of the first issue of the series, variant covers for the physical edition by Saro Hang, Cassio Ribeiro, and Ticcytx, a plush of the lead character, trading cards, stickers, a cameo in the book, and much, much more

Gritty anime protagonist, Lady Vengeance, comes to life and falls in love with a high school cheerleader.

Did you know Googling “slice of life Webtoon” brings back a ton of results? Go ahead, try it. This campaign is for a print collection of the Webtoon specifically called Slice of Life, though, which has been running since June of this year. Kat Calamia has run a number of other successful Kickstarters, including the recently-wrapped Bi Visibility anthology, and if you’re on the fence about this one you can read the comic ahead of time on Webtoon and decide for yourself.

THE GREAT FORCE #1

Creators: Zion (creator/artist/writer), David Jaxon (illustrator), Walt Barna (colorist), George Gant (letterer), Vince White (logo designer), Mshindo Kuumba (character & poster art), Ced Pharoah (publisher)
Goal: $500
End Date: November 20th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical editions of the issue, chibi stickers, posters, and more

Alien technology gave 5 teens superpowers; their friendship will make them heroes.

After a few projects from known creators, here’s one that looks interesting from a creative team of all new voices. Creator Zion cites the Static Shock and Teen Titans cartoons as influences, and the look and feel of the preview pages reflects that. This will be publisher Ced Pharoah’s second go at funding The Great Force, with a more modest funding goal this time compared to the previous campaign.

Red, White & Broke #1-4: The Complete Miniseries!

Creators: Mike Spring (writer), Dennis Tirona (artist), Thyago Brandao (colorist)
Goal: $6,500
End Date: November 18th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies of all four issues of the series, variant covers for each issue, sketches, original art pages, and more

Get The Whole Thing! Superstar Cover Artists! A Humorous Look at the Cost of Being a Superhero!

It turns out superheroes are also subject to the whims of capitalism. I’m a sucker for new takes on classic superhero tropes, and this one just looks like a lot of fun. Plus the campaign is for the full four-issue series, two of which have already been produced via successful Kickstarters, so there’s no danger of not getting a complete read with this one.
