Comic Review: Dynamite’s Barbarella #1 is Sexy Sci-Fi Fun
Overview
The Siren of Space returns for a series of all-new adventures by a dynamic new creative team! Barbarella – My First Impression
Barbarella #1 starts a new chapter of the cult classic character and it is a strong start. Sarah Hoyt’s understanding of this character and the world around her is on full display. Sarah knows that Barbarella is a cult classic character and that her sexuality is her power. Barbarella can get violent, but her beauty and sexual openness is definitely her deadliest weapon. Sarah navigates the story around this is by providing two mystery hooks. What is going on with her not getting attention? And what is going on in Camelot? The overarching adventure is freedom fighter vs empire and this comic captures the spirit of sci-fi adventure while also doing a nice call-back to the original film. By using Barb’s sexual attraction defect as a plot point it also gives a chance to explore who she is without that power.
The art by Madibek Musabekov and colors by Ivan Nunes in Barbarella #1 make for a great mix! Madibek’s art is very detailed, in terms of the environment. There is usually plenty to see in each panel if you pay attention too. But even when there isn’t, that’s when Ivan starts to shine because he has vibrant and eye catching shading and coloring on each character that highlights them. They also play well together because Madibek doesn’t have very detailed facial art, but Ivan colors all the detail in. When it comes to the action though, this issue is actually very light on it, until we get to the end of the issue thrusting our heroine into danger it’s safe to say we’ll get way more next time.
Final Verdict
Clearly Sarah Hoyt understands who she is writing and the mythos around the world of Barbarella. The sci-fi elements stick the landing every time and never let up. The appearance of her A.I. angel drums up that nice nostalgia from the film too. And with a hard call to adventure at the end, this is a good pick up and I highly recommend it.
