Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has a rating of 81 in EA Sports’ Madden NFL 22, outranking the likes of Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence.
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick earned an overall rating of 81 in EA Sports’ new Madden NFL 22 game, despite not playing in the NFL since January 2017.
The ranking puts the football player and activist ahead of a handful of current NFL quarterbacks, including 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert (80), 2021 #1 draft pick Trevor Lawrence (78) and six-time Pro Bowler Ben Roethlisberger (78), according to CBS Sports. Kaepernick also ranks higher than NFL veteran Kirk Cousins (79), 2020 #1 draft pick Joe Burrow (77) and 2016 #1 draft pick Jared Goff (77).
The latest installment in the Madden NFL franchise also gives Kaepernick an awareness score of 87, putting him in the Top 10 of the 22 Madden quarterbacks featured in the game. That score is higher than the scores awarded to Josh Allen, Kyler Murray and Matthew Stafford. Meanwhile, Kaepernick’s speed score is listed as 83, tying him with Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Fans may recall that Kaepernick was essentially blacklisted from the NFL five months after he started kneeling during the national anthem in protest of social injustice in the United States in 2017. After being released from the 49ers, Kaepernick visited with the Seahawks in May 2017 but didn’t sign with the team. He also held an open workout in Atlanta in November 2019, but no opportunities came from it.
Despite his absence from the league, EA Sports decided to add Kaepernick to Madden NFL 21 in response to a surge of support for the quarterback from both fans and professional athletes. The publisher released a statement about Kaepernick’s inclusion in the game at the time, saying, “Colin Kaepernick is one of the top free agents in football and a starting-caliber quarterback. The team at EA Sports, along with millions of Madden NFL fans, want to see him back in our game. We’ve had a long relationship with Colin through Madden NFL and worked through our past soundtrack mistakes.”
Unfortunately for the gaming imprint, Kaepernick’s inclusion in Madden NFL 21 didn’t stop players from awarding the game a record-low Metacritic user score of only 0.3 and a disappointing critic score of 63.
The 34th installment in the Madden NFL video game series, Madden NFL 22 was described by critics as an improvement on last year’s edition. Many reviews praised the game’s overhauled AI as well as its Gameday Atmosphere and Momentum systems which bring new life to the game’s crowds.
Players wanting to see if Madden NFL 22 really has improved can check the game out now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Google Stadia and PC.
