Actor Tanner Buchanan, who plays Robby Keene in Cobra Kai, discusses his character’s turn “to the dark side” in the show’s upcoming fourth season.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 3 of Cobra Kai, streaming now on Netflix.
Cobra Kai star Tanner Buchanan, who plays Robby Keene, teased his character’s full turn to “the dark side” in the upcoming fourth season of Netflix’s hit show.
Buchanan recently appeared on an episode of the Just for Variety podcast and discussed what Season 4 of Cobra Kai has in store for Robby. “The thing I can say about my character is, you know, he is turning to the dark side, because so many people have screwed him over in the past. And he’s kind of tired of that,” the actor explained. “However, through this season, he has a lot of growing to do. But… I feel like this season is the moment, specifically in his life, where this is where he’s gonna decide what road he’s gonna take. You know, what road is he gonna take. And it’s kind of gonna influence the rest of his life. And he does make that decision.”
In the earlier seasons of Cobra Kai, Robby was one of the show’s moral centers, avoiding many of the toxic behaviors that defined his father Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) in his youth. However, by Season 3, he has started his descent into villain territory. Having never had a good relationship with Johnny and having lost his connection with his mentor Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), he turns to John Kreese (Martin Kove) for guidance and support.
Kreese, of course, is one of the Karate Kid franchise’s most recognizable villains, having made his debut in the original film as Johnny’s karate coach before returning in Part II and III. With Kreese positioned to be his new mentor, Robby may be heading down a very dark path in Season 4. However, Buchanan also hinted that his character may find some redemption in the upcoming episodes.
Cobra Kai takes place 34 years after the events of the original film and explores the adult lives of the main characters and rivals Daniel and Johnny. While the show does focus heavily on the two men and their complicated history, it also features a new generation of dojo fighters, including Robby.
Kreese isn’t the only antagonist confirmed to be appearing in Season 4. As previously reported, actor Thomas Ian Griffith is reprising his iconic role as Terry Silvers.
The first three seasons of Cobra Kai are currently available to stream on Netflix, and Season 4 is expected to hit the streaming service in December.
