A new behind-the-scenes photo from Kevin Smith’s Clerks III calls back to the memorable hockey scene from the original 1994 cult classic.
Clerks III writer-director Kevin Smith has shared a new behind-the-scenes photo from the upcoming View Askewniverse threequel, which calls back to the memorable hockey scene from the original 1994 cult classic.
The photo, shared by Smith to his Instagram, sees some of Clerks III‘s cast members after an apparent game of hockey on the roof of the Quick Stop convenience store. Jeff Anderson and Brian O’Halloran — who play main characters Randal Graves and Dante Hicks, respectively — are front and center, even sporting Quick Stop hockey jerseys.
“While shooting [Clerks III], of course street hockey happened atop the roof of [Quick Stop Groceries] once again! And we all lost 10 pounds of water weight as we were up there on the hottest day of the shoot!” Smith wrote. “When you eventually see the flick, know that all of these sweet souls sweated their balls off in over 100 degree weather that afternoon to make that scene happen. But it wasn’t just a hockey match we shot: I got to bring together all the eras of my life on that searing rooftop.”
Smith elaborated, “All four of the legendary [Comic Book Men] represented both the show (as [Ming Chen] and [Michael Zapcic] played for the [Leonardo Reapers]) and my Recreation Center youth (with [Bryan Johnson] and [Baron Von Flanagan] playing on Dante and Randal’s team). [Ernie O’Donnell] and [Mike Belicose] were there repping my actual childhood, [Vincent Pereira] was in goal repping my Quick Stop days, and [O’Halloran and Anderson] were repping my dopey career behind the camera. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar — but sometimes, every decision has hidden meaning. Huge thanks to our friends and partners at [Geeky Jerseys] for suiting up our players in such quality threads! The [Quick Stop Groceries] sweater (and many others) will be available to purchase, so keep an eye on the [Geeky Jerseys] site for sales info!”
The first film in Smith’s View Askewniverse franchise, the original Clerks released in theaters in 1994. In it, main protagonist Dante is called into work at the Quick Stop on his day off. His main reason for not wanting to come in is because he has a street hockey game scheduled for later in the day, though reluctantly agrees to go to work under the condition that he’ll only be there for a few hours.
Naturally, no one comes to take over, and Dante is stuck at the shop all day. When it comes time for the hockey game (which Randal is also part of), Dante is convinced to play on the roof of the Quick Stop, with an irate customer even getting in on the game at one point. However, the game only last about twelve minutes in total, being short when their one and only ball flies off the roof and rolls into a sewer drain.
Smith followed up the O’Halloran and Anderson-led Clerks with 1995’s Mallrats, 1997’s Chasing Amy, 1999’s Dogma and 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the latter of which briefly returned to the Quick Stop, with O’Halloran and Anderson reprising their roles as Dante and Randal, respectively. O’Halloran and Anderson returned again in 2006 for Clerks II, which also starred Rosario Dawson as Becky Scott and Trevor Fehrman as Elias Grover. O’Halloran, Anderson, Dawson and Fehrman are all slated to return for Clerks III, which currently lacks a release date.
Clerks II was the final live-action entry in the View Askewniverse series until Jay and Silent Bob Reboot released in 2019. In addition to Clerks III, Smith is also currently developing a Mallrats sequel titled Twilight of the Mallrats.
