Artist Mike McQuade wasn’t surprised by the reaction to his Citizen Kane poster for The Criterion Collection.
“A film of this size and importance was going to garner a strong reaction,” McQuade said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. While the new poster for the 1941 Orson Welles film was McQuade’s first cover design for Criterion, he has done work for other publications like The New York Times, New Yorker, Nike, Penguin Books and Rolling Stone.
McQuade’s poster, which features a large, white stylized “K” against a black background, began circulating on Twitter after it was released, with dedicated fans mocking the minimalist look.
“I’ve worked on key art for some television pilots and indie films. I’ve been a practicing graphic designer and illustrator with a focus on editorial illustration, branding, and collage for more than 15 years,” he said. “All of the inspiration was drawn from the film and the cover was a new take on the iconic Citizen Kane titling. Like many people, I’ve been a fan of the film for quite a while. Watching the film over and over has been a huge perk of the job.”
Citizen Kane, widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time, was co-written and directed by Welles, who played the protagonist Charles Foster Kane. The film is still considered a masterclass in filmmaking and recently lost its 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes after a negative review emerged after 80 years.
Citizen Kane will come out on Criterion on Nov. 23. The platform will release Mulholland Drive (2001), La Strada (1954), Once Upon a Time in China: The Complete Films (1991-1997) and Menace II Society (1993) in November as well.
