It’s going on six years since Season 1 of Chivalry of a Failed Knight’s anime first aired. With plenty left to adapt, is Season 2 on the way?
Though its name might suggest otherwise, Chivalry of a Failed Knight is not a failed light novel series at all, still running successfully to this day. The same cannot be said for its anime adaptation, however. Initially airing in 2015, Failed Knight‘s single-season has so far been its only one.
There have been a few different manga versions, but any further word on a continuation for the Chivalry of a Failed Knight anime has been mum. Here’s a look at what the series is about, its various adaptations and what the chances of a Season 2 are.
The Plot & Origin of Chivalry of a Failed Knight
The plot of Chivalry of a Failed Knight involves a world where “Blazers” with superhuman powers are the norm. These fighters can summon weapons made from their very souls, with their martial value making them highly prized among the world’s governments. The director of the Japanese Hagun Academy hopes to turn his school’s luck around, starting with their worst student. Protagonist Ikki Kurogane is the lowest-ranked student at Hagun, but he’s soon paired along with Stella Vermillion, a European princess and one of the school’s best and brightest. Together, the unwitting roommates train to represent the school at the Seven Star Sword Art Festival.
Chivalry of a Failed Knight is adapted from Riku Misora’s light novel series, which began in 2013 and has so far amassed 18 volumes. A manga adaptation ran from 2014-2017, with 2014 also seeing the release of a one-shot manga spinoff focused on Stella. The anime came out toward the end of 2015, but it’s failed to achieve the same success as the manga and light novels.
Will There Be a Season 2 of Chivalry of a Failed Knight?
Season 1 of Chivalry of a Failed Knight was produced by Silver Link and Nexus, running 12 episodes. Airing back in 2015, the show so far has yet to receive a continuation. It made sense at first as the light novel series was only a few years old itself, with the anime adapting most of the material available at the time. Since then, however, there have been many more novel and manga volumes that could be used to continue the on-screen story.
The gap in time since Season 1 was made, however, is probably the biggest impediment for a second season. It’s been almost six years now, and anime typically do not come back after a five-year gap. The reason for the lack of even an OVA might be that the show simply wasn’t profitable enough for the studios involved to make more. This makes some sense, given the anime wasn’t incredibly prolific and lacked merchandising. It also aired before international anime streaming became as mainstream as it currently is (though it’s currently on Hulu), keeping it from gaining a faithful audience ready for more. Thus, it seems the titular Failed Knight may have failed to become a recurring anime star.
