Chapter Four,’ Recap and Spoilers

[ad_1]

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Stargirl Season 2, Episode 4, “Summer School: Chapter Four,” which aired Tuesday on the CW.

Last week on Stargirl, the focus was on Mike (Trae Romano) and The Shade (Jonathan Cake), with the former again not making the cut for the Justice Society of America. Meanwhile, The Shade escaped. These two still play some role in Stargirl Season 2, Episode 4, “Summer School: Chapter Four;” however, the focus is primarily on Artemis (Stella Smith) and her family this week, as will be discussed in this spoiler filled recap.

Artemis visits her mother (Neil Hopkins) and father (Joy Osmanski) in prison, complaining about how the foster home is far from their usual expectations. She also reveals that tryouts for college are this coming weekend, and she wishes they could be with her for it, and her parents reassure her that they believe in her.

Meanwhile, Beth (Anjelika Washington) continues to try to get Chuck up and running, hoping to learn why they are in danger and who is Eclipso. She also tries to convince her mom to go out with her dad, but her mom is not taking the bait. She later finds that Eclipso is one of the few confidential files in the JSA.

Pat (Luke Wilson) talked to Barbara (Amy Smart) about the Black Diamond last week, and they think it’s best not to tell Courtney (Brec Bassinger) about everything, but she overhears them drop Eclipso’s name. She admits she knows about him because of Chuck and how they can not learn more about him via their JSA resources. Pat admits he is pure evil trapped in the Black Diamond and whoever has it has his powers, including mental manipulation via fabricated visions. While the JSA stopped Eclipso, even Pat seems at a loss at how this was done. At the moment, it seems like The Shade is attempting a team up with Eclipso.

While Cindy (Meg Delacy) is in possession of the diamond, Eclipso forces her to see a vision of her dead mother, attempting to guilt her. When Cindy calls him out, he reminds her of their real mission, which is to make their own Injustice Society, so she needs to let the past go.

At school, Artemis continues to struggle with her new situation, even exhibiting heightened strength. Her parents also want better for her, breaking out of prison to see her tryouts, so they take Mike hostage to get Pat’s help.

Meanwhile, Courtney attempts to extend an olive branch to Artemis, who takes it as an insult to her and her parents. Cindy also returns to recruit The Fiddler’s son, Isaac (Max Frantz), claiming they share a similar pain — losing their parents. She later blames the JSA for their deaths and tells him that he will eventually learn to take over his father and mother’s role as The Fiddler.

Pat arrives at the Pit Stop after getting a distressing call from Mike, finding Tigress and Sportsmaster, who admit they will return to jail if Pat helps them attend their daughter’s tryout. This leads to a strange bonding session between the villains and Barbara and Pat. It’s awkward and tense at first, but they oddly have similar interests: the safety and future of their children.

As the parents bond, the JSA break down what they know of the Black Diamond. It was originally from Diablo Island, which was eventually taken off the map in 1832. This is likely because no one would return from the island. It’s also revealed that during a war, a tribe summoned an evil entity and trapped it in the diamond. It appears the author of many of these sources, Bruce Gordon, may know the most about this diamond, as he was the only one to return from the island; however, they can find nothing on him beyond what they have, so the JSA part in hopes of finding more.

While at a bookstore doing research, Courtney runs into The Shade, accusing him of conspiring with Eclipso; however, he takes deep offense in this and alludes that Pat may not be telling her the full truth. He also claims that when he does something bad, it’s because someone deserves it. Furthermore, he reveals Eclipso killed McNider’s daughter and plans to dispose of the Black Diamond to permanently stop Eclipso. While he says this is because he is bored, it seems like The Shade genuinely cares about some of humanity.

ARTEMIS STARGIRL

At tryouts, Artemis initially struggles until she sees her parents cheering her on, so she delivers an amazing, inhuman performance on the field. However, things turn south when Cindy uses the Black Diamond to make Artemis see a SWAT team target her parents, so she attacks one of them, but soon she sees it’s just Courtney. Her parents also come clean to her about what they’ve done and how they want her to have a future. Unfortunately, her influenced behavior loses her a position on the college team, and Cindy uses this as her chance to recruit Artemis to the team her parents were a part of.

While Pat said he would no longer keep secrets from Courtney, there is still more he hasn’t revealed. Barbara also agrees they should not reveal everything to protect the kids. Meanwhile, Courtney goes out to find The Shade in hopes of the truth.

The real punch of the episode comes with Beth. She makes a breakthrough with Chuck. When she talks to him again, he reveals he is not actually Chuck. He is Dr. Mid-Nite, so he is not dead. While the reception is choppy, it’s clear he has been lost in some sort of shadow realm, and it seems like The Shade had something to do with this. As Season 2 of Stargirl continues, with new episodes airing Tuesdays at 8/7c on the CW, the truth about his fate may soon come to light.
