Giant-Sized Amazing Spider-Man: The Chameleon Conspiracy concludes the wall-crawlers’ battle against the Foreigner in an epic, blockbuster fashion.
Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man: The Chameleon Conspiracy #1 lives up to its name. The issue is bombastic and larger than life, with Spidey comfortably demanding center stage amongst the chaos. With a myriad of storylines and character arcs to wrap up, Giant-Sized Amazing Spider-Man initially seems to bite off more than it can chew. However, the issue is explosively fun at its core with its final pages managing to settle into a satisfying resolution.
From writers Nick Spencer and Ed Brisson, artists Marcelo Ferreira, Carlos Gómez, Zé Carlos and Ig Guara and colorists Andrew Crossley, Morry Hollowell and Rachelle Rosenberg, Giant-Sized Amazing Spider-Man: The Chameleon Conspiracy is action-packed with a vibrancy that complements Spidey’s best features. In the midst of all-out pandemonium, the creative team manages to keep the charming, lighthearted soul of Spider-Man at the center of everything. Although Peter is not the narrative focus of the issue, his wit holds the story together.
Nick Spencer and Ed Brisson walk a tightrope with Giant-Sized Amazing Spider-Man: The Chameleon Conspiracy. Each time the issue threatens to fall into meaningless, overcharged conflict, the creative team balances with a well-timed laugh — sometimes utilizing an entire page just to depressurize combat sequences. Usually, this balancing act utilizes Spidey throwing a quip or a line in the way of a nearby villain, giving the issue a much clearer sense of purpose. It would have been easy for the finale of The Chameleon Conspiracy to focus on everything other than Peter. But Spencer and Brisson go out of their way to make sure that the finale feels just as much of a Spider-Man book as ever, and the issue is all the better for it.
Ferreira, Gómez, Carlos and Guara deliver on the action and the humor as well, seamlessly marrying the panels to the overall feel of the issue. Giant-Sized Amazing Spider-Man: The Chameleon Conspiracy looks fantastic, but what is more impressive is how the pages push the story forward. The page layouts and the flashy, dynamic panels themselves inject an essential sense of life and movement to an issue that could easily have been weighed down by the sheer scale of its climactic final confrontation. While the book has a tendency to look over the top, anything else would have felt out of place given the intensity of this particular issue. The action-packed pages of this issue feel more natural than when the story slows down. Featuring some exemplary colorwork from Crossley, Hollowell and Rosenberg, the final chapter of The Chameleon Conspiracy is bold, sharp and exciting.
Much of Giant-Sized Amazing Spider-Man: The Chameleon Conspiracy takes place aboard a giant flying casino over New York City. That is to say, everything about this issue is exaggerated and dramatized, but not overly so. The narrative craves some pure, over-the-top action and the creative team delivers without hesitation. However, the issue never allows itself to fall into unthinking, meaningless conflict. There is a method to the madness and that method is fun. It comes across over every panel and rescues the issue from becoming tedious or repetitive amidst the high-flying scuffle.
This issue does mark the finale of The Chameleon Conspiracy, so those wishing to see the action unfold will want to get up to date on the run. Giant-Sized Amazing Spider-Man: The Chameleon Conspiracy #1 is recommended for comic book fans who love to see Spidey as the fearless, quip-throwing wall-crawler we know and love with blockbuster action sequences.
