This week gives Chainsaw Man fans much more to celebrate on top of their already mounting excitement brought on by news of its anime adaptation first rumored in December 2020. As of today, fans can read the creator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s newest story: a 140-page one-shot officially found online here.
Titled “Look Back,” the one-shot was initially speculated by fans to be a recap of the Chainsaw Man‘s incredible two-year run from December of 2018 to 2020. Serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, it diverged from the more traditional storylines of the shonen demographic with its unusual premise, leaning heavily into its dark humor and gory violence, and quickly became one of the top contenders for the most popular upcoming shonen. Fans were gutted at first when it came to end announced in December 2020, but then quickly rejoiced once it was revealed it was merely the conclusion to Part I. The story of Denji & co. would continue in the upcoming Part II, which will be serialized in Jump+ (but not before we get an anime adaptation currently in the works, of course)!
Unexpectedly, “Look Back” is, in fact, not a recap of Part I in preparation for its continuation (that will be released at some unspecified date). Instead, it explores an entirely different subject matter and tone, demonstrating the versatility of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s writing and illustrating prowess. Following two young students aspiring to become manga artists, it takes a look at the different challenges they face along the way to achieving their dreams. The title, perhaps, hints at a more personal nostalgia for Fujimoto, who has rocketed to fame for Chainsaw Man. It looks to be a heartfelt love letter to his own journey as a mangaka. Whatever the inspiration may be, the art is certainly gorgeous, and I am chomping at the bit to read it!
