Batman and Catwoman’s future daughter has her own rogues gallery and unique variation of Gotham City, which is on display in Batman/Catwoman #6.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batman/Catwoman #6, on sale now
The different unique time periods of Gotham City introduced over the years have allowed there to be plenty of different potential futures for Batman and the city he’s long fought for. This includes one where his daughter has taken up the mantle of the Bat, and even gained her own unique number of villains to face off with on the regular.
During an adventure into the future, Gotham in Batman/Catwoman #6 by Tom King, Clay Mann, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles, Batwoman and Catwoman get the chance to feature some notable members of Batwoman’s own personal rogue’s gallery as they fight their way across Gotham.
Batman/Catwoman has split its narrative between two time periods — the present-day Gotham City where Batman and Catwoman are dealing with their relationship troubles, while also jumping ahead to a future where Bruce Wayne has peacefully passed away from cancer after decades of marriage with Selina Kyle. In this future, the daughter of the pair — Helena — has taken over her father’s role as protector of Gotham. She’s become the Batwoman of this era and shares a partnership with Dick Grayson in his new capacity as the Gotham City Chief of Police. Although there have been hints about which villains have been able to survive into this future, comparatively little has been showcased about what this new Batwoman’s actual life as a Gotham hero looks like.
However, Batman/Catwoman #6 in part deals with the fallout of Helena Wayne revealing she knows her mother murdered the Joker of this future. Instead of outright answering the question, Selina instead elects to join her daughter during her nightly crusade as Gotham’s protector. Donning her own Silver Age suit, Catwoman joins her daughter for her nightly crusade. Along the way, they encounter three members of Batwoman’s current rogue’s gallery: there’s Dragoon, a random Gotham goon who is also a dragon-man — effectively giving Batwoman an apparent new incarnation of someone like Killer Croc. Four-Face is a pair of twins who were doused in acid and became murderers.
Catwoman is quick to admit that Two-Face would have found the pair very fun, although Batwoman has less patience for them due to their murderous history. Finally, there’s Polymath — wearing a mirror-like mask and with a green suit that displays numbers, Polymath is apparently something of an embarrassment though, akin to the Calendar Man or other more mocked antagonists. While their adventure doesn’t fully reveal the criminal underworld of this future Gotham, giving the new Batwoman some of her own unique rogues is a good way for the series to broaden the timeline she resides in. Alongside the concept of Grayson taking on the position of the police commissioner and his hints that the Bat-Family still largely exists and protects the world, it’s a compelling concept to see this world expand somewhat.
Despite the tensions between mother and daughter at the moment, it’s clear that Catwoman missed taking to the streets and fighting. With six issues still in the miniseries, it’ll be interesting to see how the future of Batwoman continues to open up. There could be more villains to introduce, and even the potential to meet a female love interest for Helena that was hinted at earlier in the series during the older Joker’s last encounter with Catwoman. But as it goes, this is a nice window into one possible future of Gotham City.
