Carole and Howard Baskin file a lawsuit against Netflix and Royal Goode Productions for using unauthorized footage in Tiger King 2.
Carole Baskin, a central figure in Netflix’s 2020 docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, is suing the streaming platform and Royal Goode Productions for using archived footage of her in the upcoming sequel series, Tiger King 2.
Baskin and her husband Howard filed the suit with the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division. According to the complaint, Netflix and Royal Goode were only authorized to use footage of the Baskins for “a [single] documentary motion picture,” not a sequel. It goes on to assert that “unauthorized use of the film footage of the Baskins and Big Cat Rescue secured by Royal Goode Productions under the Appearance Releases will cause the Baskins irreparable injury for which the Baskins have no adequate remedy at law.”
“While we cannot stop Netflix and Royal Goode Productions from producing low-brow, salacious and sensational programing, we do believe that we have the right to control footage filmed of us under false pretenses,” Howard told Deadline. “We like to believe that most Americans will agree that we should be entitled to protect our reputations in this manner and hold entertainment giants to their word.”
In response to the suit, Judge Virginia M. Hernandez Covington said, “While the Court understands the Baskins’ frustration, it does not appear that inclusion of Defendants’ footage of the Baskins will cause any immediate harm that cannot be compensated with monetary damages. Importantly, the Court merely finds that the Baskins are not entitled to the extraordinary remedy of a temporary restraining order, which would be entered before Defendants have had an adequate opportunity to respond.”
Tiger King 2 was surprise-announced in September and serves as a follow-up to the landmark 2020 docuseries that captivated audiences across the world with its story of Joseph Schreibvogel, aka Joe Exotic, the former owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. A self-proclaimed expert in the world of big cats, Exotic was arrested in 2018 and imprisoned the following year for multiple accounts of animal abuse and for hiring two men to murder Big Cat Rescue founder Carole Baskin.
Tiger King 2 premieres Nov. 17 on Netflix.
