Carol Danvers Cosplay Takes Her Original Ms. Marvel Look Higher, Further, Faster

A Captain Marvel fan shows off her vibrant, comics-accurate cosplay illustrating Carol Danvers’ original Ms. Marvel look from the 1970s.

A talented Marvel fan showed off her sleek Carol Danvers cosplay depicting the character’s original Ms. Marvel costume, long before she became Captain Marvel.

Cosplayer Crystal Fae posted a photo of herself at Emerald City Comic Con 2021 with her Ms. Marvel look on full display. Fae’s outfit most closely resembles Ms. Marvel’s second suit, which was a slight variation on the first. The cosplay features all the old-school Carol staples, including her bright red bodysuit with black accents, black gloves, long red scarf and signature golden eight-point star. The main difference with Fae’s costume is the lace-up thigh-high stiletto boots, reminiscent of the character’s more recent all-black ensemble.

Fae has also rocked cosplays depicting Marvel’s Black Widow, Final Fantasy VII villain Sephiroth, EDI from Mass Effect and more. Aside from her cosplay efforts, Fae is also an accomplished illustrator and concept artist. Much of her work puts a realistic spin on characters from well-known properties such as The Legend of Zelda, Dragon Age and Final Fantasy. Fae often livestreams the process of creating her art and holds gaming streams as well.

Carol Danvers first appeared in 1968’s Marvel Super-Heroes #13 by Roy Thomas, Gene Colan and Paul Reinman as a U.S. Air Force officer and colleague of superhero Mar-Vell. She was later introduced as the heroine Ms. Marvel in her own 1970s comic series after having her DNA fused with Mar-Vell’s. The character has taken on several monikers over the years as her powers have evolved, including Binary and Warbird, but she is arguably best known as the current Captain Marvel. Carol adopted the name after encouragement from Captain America in the 2012-13 Captain Marvel series from writer Kelly Sue DeConnick.

Carol made her big-screen debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Captain Marvel in 2019, starring Brie Larson in the title role. Shown as one of the most powerful beings in the MCU, Carol appears again in Avengers: Endgame and had a mid-credits cameo in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Next up for Carol is The Marvels, an upcoming MCU flick that will unite Captain Marvel with Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who played a significant role in WandaVision. Also set to appear in The Marvels is actor Zawe Ashton as a yet-unnamed antagonist. Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Megan McDonnell, the film was originally scheduled for 2022 but will now hit theaters on Feb. 17, 2023.
