Captain Carter, Marvel Zombies, and more featured in trailer for Marvel’s WHAT IF…? animated series

Last December during Disney’s Investor Day presentation, we got a first look teaser at the upcoming What If…? Marvel Studios Disney+ original animated series. Inspired by the concept of the eponymous Marvel anthology comic, What If…? explores alternate histories in the Marvel Universe if key moments had not occurred as they did in mainstream continuity. Today the first trailer for the What If…? animated series was released.

Like the comic, the animated series will feature Uatu the Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright) observing alternate realities. Some of stories glimpsed in the trailer include Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) becoming Captain Carter, Killmonger saving Tony Stark, and T’Challa being raised by Yondu (Michael Rooker) as a Ravager. Perhaps most notably, What If…? will feature the final performance of actor Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, who tragically passed away last year.

Given what we know about alternate timelines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as explained by Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) in the Loki series, there was a “vast multiversal war,” in which multiple timelines battled one another for supremacy that eventually resulted into the organization of a single timeline: the Sacred Timeline. In order to stop the “madness” of “another multiversal war,” the Time Variance Authority was created in order to enforce the Sacred Timeline by seeking out those who cause Nexus events by deviating from the narrative.

However, with one more episode of Loki left and the truth and real mastermind of the TVA slowly being revealed (safe bet it’s Kang the Conqueror), we’ll have to wait and see how rules of alternate worlds as established by the Loki series connect to the What If…? animated series… or if there will even be a TVA left standing.

In addition, a poster for the animated series was also released, which you can see below.

What If…? premieres on Wednesday, August 11th on Disney+.
