In Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, only one class captures the spirit of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon — and it’s definitely not the Wizard.
When designing characters in Dungeons & Dragons based off of those from TV shows and movies, choosing a class that works best for them can be a challenge. The choice requires players to balance the character’s lore and abilities with the options available in Fifth Edition, sometimes sacrificing accuracy for efficiency or vice versa. However, sometimes the ideal D&D class can come as a surprise. For example, while it may not be the first option that comes to find for some fans, Sailor Moon is definitely a Cleric with Usagi’s tiara serving as her spiritual weapon.
Sailor Moon calls on healing magic to cleanse evil, and she does it all in the name of her deity — the spirit of the Moon itself. The Cleric class is a perfect fit, and with the right subclass and spells, players will be able to effectively fight for love and justice against the Negaverse.
The Right Class to Make a Pretty Guardian
While Sailor Moon uses innate magic like a Sorcerer does, her faith in her calling and dedication to healing and cleansing evil makes the Cleric class a perfect fit both mechanically and flavor-wise. Usagi’s friends and fellow Scouts always refer to Sailor Moon as a commander in the fight against evil, and she is a brave, kind soul willing to put her life on the line to protect her friends and the Earth.
Usagi also uses several key abilities that reflect a Cleric’s bread-and-butter moves. Her tiara attack is remarkably similar to Spiritual Weapon, and her healing moon wand acts as a restoration for creatures under the control of the Negaverse. Sailor Moon even has a Destroy Undead-like ability to dust lesser evil creatures in large groups.
The Best Domain for Sailor Moon
While Peace Domain is a good fit for Sailor Moon, there’s a newer subclass that is not currently an official part of the game that would likely work even better. If the Empathy Domain from Critical Role campaign three, the subclass of Sam Riegel’s Fresh Cut Grass, becomes official in the upcoming Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep adventure book, that could be the ideal choice, but until then, the Peace Domain will work fine.
Peace Domain Clerics bring people together and foster unity and friendship, just like Usagi. The Emboldening Bond feature is also perfect for her. It allows a player to create a group bond that amplifies their abilities, which matches with Sailor Moon’s ability to bring the Scouts together and use the Sailor Planet Power.
The Protective Bond feature also mimics Usagi’s deep desire to keep her friends and family from harm. One of Sailor Moon’s most impressive uses of this skill is when she repeatedly jumps in front of the attacks meant to harm Tuxedo Mask by Ali and An. She also frequently does this for Chibi Usa, her future daughter.
Usagi’s Signature Spells
Many Cleric spells line up with Sailor Moon’s abilities perfectly, from Spiritual Weapon being the stand-in for her tiara to Beacon of Hope replicating her wand’s power to help her friends. In many episodes, Usagi’s ability to inspire her friends and see the good in people is what saves the day. She even possesses the power to cleanse those who want to give up evil and turn to good. The Greater Restoration spell can mimic this magic. The spell can remove curses, and the Negaverse’s control over its subjects can certainly be viewed as a curse.
Aid is also an important spell to take when embodying Usagi. The boost to friendly creatures hit points reflects Sailor Moon’s magic to help her Scouts survive intense battles. Spare the Dying is also a great fit, as Sailor Moon has had to use her Silver Crystal to keep Mamoru and her friends from dying on multiple occassions.
Another important use of the Silver Crystal is when Usagi uses the full extent of its power to revive the Earth or stop a world-ending attack. The feat almost functions as Divine Intervention, allowing Sailor Moon to channel the highest level of magic capable by drawing strength from the Moon. It also resembles some of the highest level spells available to a Cleric, including Mass Heal and True Resurrection. These spells can restore a massive amount of HP and bring a person back from the dead with just their name, respectively, and are a must for maxed out Sailor Moon– or Sailor Cosmos in this case.
