Buffy Star Nicholas Brendon Suffers Medical Issues Following Prescription Drug Charges

[ad_1]

Buffy actor Nicholas Brendon is unable to participate in press for his upcoming film due to medical conditions aggravated by his recent fraud arrest.

Actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has pulled out of the promotional circuit for his upcoming Amazon Studios film Wanton Want due to worsened spinal conditions, allegedly aggravated by his recent arrest.

Theresa Fortier, Brendon’s manager, told the Daily Mail, “Right now he is concentrating on his health.” The pain caused by Brendon’s ongoing back problems has reportedly spread to his legs and groin, making it difficult for the actor to walk. Brendon suffers from a spinal compression issue known as Cauda equina syndrome, which escalated after a fall he took in Fortier’s Indiana home in February.

Brendon’s February medical issues cropped up just as his former Buffy colleague and on-screen love interest, Charisma Carpenter, issued public abuse allegations against showrunner Joss Whedon. As Xander Harris served as a symbolic stand-in for Whedon within the larger Buffyverse, Brendon felt tremendous outside pressure to respond to the situation. Prior to his back surgery in February, Brendon addressed Carpenter’s allegations from his hospital bed, both issuing his support for her and obfuscating his own mixed feelings about working with Whedon on Buffy.

Since his time on Buffy, Brendon has garnered a complicated reputation for his frequent run-ins with the law, including multiple domestic abuse and theft charges. In late August, Brendon found himself in legal trouble once more when he was arrested in Indiana for alleged prescription drug fraud and parole violations.

Fortier claims Brendon’s recent arrest, and its resulting jail time, re-aggravated his fragile spinal health. The actor’s manager shared that Brendon had to sleep on a cement floor while in jail, which has caused these new and worsened symptoms.

In a Facebook video, posted the day after Fortier’s statement, Brendon’s seen singing and showing fans his recent art project. Art has become a primary outlet of Brendon’s over the years, and he presented this particular piece to fans as a metaphor for his “askew” life. Brendon alludes to both the physical and psychological pain in his canvas and remains seated during the video, as the current pain in his legs and groin have reportedly made standing a challenge.

While Brendon has officially removed himself from the press circuit of Wanton Want, Fortier provided no further update as to whether her client’s current medical condition will impact his other upcoming projects. Brendon’s name is attached to films On a Dark and Bloody Ground, Dark Christmas, Best Sheep and The Inspector Chronicles as well as a second holiday film, Christmas Slasher, which is currently in post-production. Outstanding legal matters and the possibility of an impending surgery or treatment for Brendon’s debilitating pain could possibly impact these future roles.

Wanton Want, which stars Brendon as a tormented screenwriter, premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 28 and features performances by Jackie Moore, Shoshana Wilder, Phillip Andre Botello and Tuesday Knight.
