Saga’s Brian K. Vaughan teases that there may be tragedy ahead for fan-favorite character Ghüs when the Image series returns in 2022.
Brian K. Vaughan, the author of the critically acclaimed comic book series Saga, teased that beloved character Ghüs may meet a tragic end as the series prepares to return from its three-and-a-half-year hiatus.
Vaughan revealed in an interview with EW that the adorable bipedal seal-man was actually created by Saga artist Fiona Staples after she drew him on a whim and asked if he could be included in the sprawling space epic. When asked about Ghüs’ future, both Vaughan and Staples expressed the hope that he would pop up in the story again. “That good boy is out there somewhere, even if he doesn’t show up in the first issue back,” Vaughan said. “I know readers would boycott otherwise.”
Saga, however, has consistently shown throughout its 54 issues to date that there is a price to pay for any sort of violence. Ghüs is no exception to this, no matter how lovable he may be. Although the cattle herder hasn’t directly partaken in any bloodshed, Vaughan noted that the deaths of two of Saga‘s main characters in Issue #54 can be traced back to Ghüs’ actions earlier in the series. Vaughan may be referring to the fact that it was Ghüs who convinced Prince Robot IV to help Marko and Alana find their daughter Hazel after she was kidnapped by rebels in Saga #30. This ultimately led to the prince’s demise at the hands of mercenary The Will.
“Will Ghüs pay for his sins someday?” Vaughan teased. “I guess we’ll see.”
Saga is a space opera that follows husband and wife Marko and Alana, who hail from opposing sides of a long-standing galactic war, and their daughter Hazel, who is born in the first issue. In a bid to keep themselves safe from the various bounty hunters, military personnel and even royalty sent to hunt them down, the young family travels across the universe and receives help from both expected and unexpected places along the way. However, Saga was put on indefinite hiatus with the conclusion of its first half in July 2018, with Vaughan citing mild burnout as the reason for the break.
Fans were left waiting in the dark until this year’s New York Comic Con, where Vaughan and Staples announced that Saga will return in January 2022, around three-and-a-half years since the hiatus began. To kick off the second half of the series, Saga #55 will be twice as long as a regular issue, while still retaining its ordinary $2.99 price.
