As the Boruto anime filler episodes detail the new Chūnin Exams, one particular youngster glows up with a cute but very destructive upgrade.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 224, “Bakaneko Legend,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.
As the Boruto anime’s fillers roll on to detail the new Chūnin Exams, one of the most intriguing aspects is how fans get to see young shinobi shine who may not have been part of the bigger arcs. Usually the series focuses on Naruto’s son, Sarada, Mitsuki and Kawaki, with Shikadai and Inojin getting some air time now and again as support. But these fights put new talent on showcase, allowing other ninja to display their skills. In a brutal fight against Iwabe, one particular youngster glows up with a cute but very destructive upgrade.
This is none other than Wasabi, who’s been quite tempestuous throughout Boruto. She’s feuded with the hot-headed Iwabe in the past, but their brawl is a lot more sentimental and cerebral as she struggles to cope with her family’s pressure.
They want her to advance and become Hokage, elevating their social ranking as they’re one of Konoha’s lesser-known families. To them, this is the ticket to fame and fortune, with Wasabi recalling how obsessed her kin is with the Hokage title as a form of prestige. More so, her grandmother keeps telling various versions of a story where their ancestors were viewed as badass warriors — and how she’s got a scroll with a cat jutsu that’ll make Wasabi epically strong.
After all, Wasabi is powered up by feline jutsus, giving her the strength and speed of a cat. It’s akin to how Sasuke uses the Susanoo golem and how Naruto had Kurama as a shield in battle. But Wasabi is cool with her golem cat being small and nimble, as she doesn’t dream big or want to excel that much. She’s also demotivated, believing her grandmother is lying while the family gaslit themselves to believe the hype.
Interestingly, this all changes when Iwabe builds a cat monument with all his chakra and passes out during their fight, making it clear that a giant feline can exist and Wasabi should strive to become it. However, as the statue crumbles and is about to fall on Iwabe, Wasabi grabs her grandmother’s scroll and absorbs the legendary “Ten Million Ryo” jutsu, manifesting a massive cat. She holds the structure up before smashing away some falling debris to save Iwabe, stunning everyone in Konoha’s arena.
Wasabi is clearly the new titan in Boruto, and seeing as Naruto’s lost Kurama and Sasuke doesn’t have his Rinnegan anymore, it’s most welcomed. They need brawn and brains, and this kind of muscle works out perfectly. They’ll all be eager to train her up as they can clearly spot the potential, nodding to how Chōji’s family could expand themselves and become bigger too.
Still, they’re not juggernauts like this — and what’s most important is that, while Wasabi wins and leaves folks in awe, she’s repaired her family problems and finally believes her clan can rise to the top through her achievements.
