Book of Boba Fett’s Phantom Menace Nods Have Star Wars Fans Celebrating the Divisive Prequel

A number of references to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in The Book of Boba Fett makes fans as happy as Anakin Skywalker in a podrace.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers from The Book of Boba Fett‘s fifth episode, “Chapter 5: The Return of the Mandalorian,” streaming now on Disney+.

The fifth episode of Disney+’s The Book of Boba Fett may be titled “The Return of the Mandalorian,” but it’s not just the return of Din Djarin that gave Star Wars fans plenty to cheer about, as the episode was littered with references to 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

In the episode, Din Djarin arrives on Tatooine to answer a call from ship mechanic Peli Motto. Mando has yet to replace his destroyed Razor Crest but Motto has a new ship in mind — an N-1 Starfighter. Also known as Naboo Starfighters, these single-person ships were featured heavily in The Phantom Menace and fans on Twitter were quick to spot the connection.

When the craft is repaired and ready for a test flight, Djarin takes it for a spin through some Tatooine scenery that looked very familiar to fans of Episode I‘s podracing sequence. The similarities between how Din flew the starfighter and how a young Anakin Skywalker both piloted one and a podracer were also easy to see.

There were also plenty of smaller references scattered throughout the episode, such as Motto explaining the starfighters were created on Naboo for the Queens of the planet.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace was released in theaters in 1999, sixteen years after the release of Return of the Jedi. Set 32 years before the original trilogy, it was the first of three divisive prequel movies that aimed to tell the story of how Anakin Skywalker became the dreaded Darth Vader.

Marcia Lucas, the film editor of the original trilogy and ex-wife of Star Wars creator George Lucas said that after seeing The Phantom Menace for the first time at a preview, she sat in her car and cried. “I cried because I didn’t think it was very good,” she recalled.

However, the movie does have its supporters. Liam Neeson who played Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn said in 2020 that he was “very proud of the film.” Plus, The Book of Boba Fett director/producer/writer Dave Filoni gave a lengthy defense and explanation of the film, saying that he thought the prequels “were almost an impossible task.” He likens the plot of the movie to the title of the most famous track from the score. “That’s why it’s the Duel of the Fates. It’s the fate of this child,” Filoni said, in reference to Anakin Skywalker.
