In “The Tribes of Tatooine,” Boba Fett acclimates to life as a Tusken Raider, but he might have caused a big problem for his new tribe.
Warning: The following contains spoilers from Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett “Chapter 2: Tribes of Tatooine,” streaming now on Disney+.
As far as plot goes, The Book of Boba Fett’s first episode was fairly light. The only thing that really happened was Boba Fett’s escape from the Sarlacc Pit and his joining the Tusken tribe. Outside of his flashback dreams, Boba and Fennec Shand started to consolidate control of Jabba’s empire. The thing is, based on what fans saw in The Mandalorian and in the extensive marketing campaign, none of that was new information. “Chapter 2,” however, might have hinted at some bigger plot points, and it did so by introducing some potentially major players for the series.
Like its plot, Chapter 1’s character pool was pretty uneventful. Obviously, Boba and Fennec featured prominently, but other than that, there weren’t many major characters. The mayor’s shifty majordomo made a brief appearance, and the Sanctuary’s owner, Garsa Fwip, made her presence felt, but in the grand scheme of things, neither looked like they will end up pushing the plot. However, Episode 2 expanded the series’ character list considerably, and one group could cause some major problems.
In the “Tribes of Tatooine” present day, Boba and Fennec went into Mos Espa after one of the assassins from Episode 1 incriminated the town’s mayor. The majordomo tried to keep Boba away, but the bounty hunter pushed his way into Mok Shaiz’s throne room. There, fans got their first look at the Ithorian mayor, who naturally denied involvement with the assassin. That notwithstanding, his distaste for Boba Fett as Tatooine’s newest daimyo hasn’t been well-hidden, and he could potentially be a problem going forward.
After leaving the mayor’s residence, Boba and Fennec soon found two more Hutt-sized problems. Two of Jabba’s cousins appeared in Mos Espa to stake their claim on all of Jabba’s former territory. The two Hutts, who happen to be twins, brought all of the law and muscle of the Hutts with them, including a Wookiee gladiator-turned-bounty-hunter named Black Krrsantan. But while the twins will almost undoubtedly pose problems to Boba’s domain in the coming episodes, there is another problem.
Boba Fett’s biggest threat came during his flashback. After killing the Sand Creature, the Tusken tribe allowed Boba into their good graces and taught him how to fight with a gaffi stick. While he was acclimating to Tusken life in “Chapter 2,” he got a fast-paced lesson when a train-like “long speeder” came whizzing by their camp with guns blazing. Determined to help his new people, Boba took a trip to the fabled Tosche Station and, after a classic bar fight, commandeered some speeder bikes as a way to combat the “long speeder.”
Boba taught the Tuskens how to ride, and the next time that the “long speeder” came, they launched a counter-attack. That wasn’t an easy task because the train was very fast and manned by some pretty good shots. Neither of those things was a coincidence, though, because the train belonged to the notorious, spice-running Pyke Crime Syndicate. They appeared in The Clone Wars a few times and in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and if one thing was clear, the group wasn’t to be trifled with.
Boba Fett and his band of raiders ended up winning the confrontation by crashing their train. That meant that the Pykes lost their water and all of their expensive spice. Then, telling the Pyke leader about terms for a future toll, Boba made all of the survivors walk to Anchorhead. In doing so, Boba protected the Tusken’s for the time being, but he might have only instigated a bigger problem. At this point in the timeline, Jabba was already dead, meaning that there was nothing keeping the Pykes off of Tatooine. So, Boba could end up having to deal with the full might of the powerful crime syndicate in the near future.
To see if the Pykes pose a future threat, watch The Book of Boba Fett. New episodes are available on Disney+ every Wednesday.
