Star Wars has its fair share of Jedi-hunting killers, but The Book of Boba Fett may have teased that more cybernetic villains are on the way.
For years, Star Wars fans clamored for more, on-screen Boba Fett content, and Disney finally listened by giving those fans The Book of Boba Fett. However, many people have been unimpressed with the Disney+ series. Some say that Boba’s character developments have undermined his villain status, while others say that he talks too much. Of course, some fans absolutely love the series, so there’s conflict among Star Wars fans yet again. If there’s one thing that fans can agree on, though, it’s that the biker gang introduced in Chapter 3 was kind of ridiculous.
The “Mods,” as Boba called his new bodyguards, combined their human physiology with droid parts, making themselves into a gang of cyborgs. It might sound like an odd idea, but cyborgs have been a part of Star Wars since the very beginning. After all, Darth Vader was a cyborg and so was General Grievous. While both of them relied on cybernetics to preserve their lives, it’s no small wonder that some people would use modifications to improve their regular bodies.
It’s possible that the Mods’ enhancements could simply be Star Wars’ version of rebellious youths doing questionable things with their bodies, but the cybernetics could be hinting in a much bigger direction for the greater Star Wars universe. Recently, Alyssa Wong’s Star Wars: Doctor Aphra comic series introduced an ancient Dark Side cult called the Ascendant. In the depths of history, the cult used technology to replicate the effects of the Force, and because of that, it made enemies with both the Jedi and the Sith.
All indication is that the Jedi and the Sith made an alliance to rid the galaxy of the Ascendant, but even if that was the case, it’s they weren’t able to destroy all of the Ascendant technology. Doctor Aphra and Kho Phon Farrus have both found Ascendant artifacts and beheld their awful power, meaning a revival of the Ascendant cult could technically be possible, and with the help of Crimson Dawn’s Archivist, Farrus might try and do just that.
Now, to be clear, the Mods’ cybernetics are not Ascendant technology, and they’re not going to take over the galaxy any time soon. However, their appearance in The Book of Boba Fett could be a sign that Star Wars might start using cybernetics more often. Some of the things that the Mods did were fascinating. One of them had a hydraulic leg, and another had a blowtorch in his wrist. Used in the right way, even those basic cybernetics could be a way to combat Force-sensitivity, and it’s been done before successfully.
In Star Wars: Darth Vader (2015) #5 and 6, Vader uncovered one of Palpatine’s attempts to replace him. A Doctor Cylo created a number of cybernetic Sith to compete for Vader’s place as Palpatine’s second in command. Two of the most notable were the twins Aiolin and Morit Astarte. Starting as normal humans, Cylo modified the Astarte twins much like the Mods modified themselves. The twins could shoot fire from their wrists and had rockets in their feet. When Vader found out about Cylo’s plots, the Dark Lord deemed the twins an abomination toward the Force. But regardless of that, the Astarte twins were still formidable warriors and proved themselves quite capable of handling their lightsabers.
Cybernetics could be an interesting new direction for Star Wars. The Mods probably won’t appear past The Book of Boba Fett, but the concept of cybernetically-enhanced warriors will surely endure. It’s possible Star Wars will expand on the idea of a Jedi and Sith team-up against the Ascendant the war between the Ascendant and the Jedi, or maybe a real techno-Sith will wind up fighting against the Jedi in a future Star Wars movie or series. Either way, the Mods started an on-screen trend of willful cybernetic enhancement.
To see how the Mods tease something bigger, The Book of Boba Fett is streaming now on Disney+.
