Blood Red Sky has plenty of blood and gore in other parts of the movie, but Nadja’s origin story is bloodless for a reason.

Netflix’s Blood Red Sky sees Nadja reveal her true nature as a vampire while on a transatlantic flight with her son Elias. Their flight was hijacked, and Nadja did her best to save everyone on board, but in the end, she failed and everyone except Elias and one other passenger became vampires. And as expected with vampire movies, there was plenty of blood and gore, but surprisingly, Nadja’s origin story was almost without it entirely.
Interspersed throughout the film, flashbacks explain how Nadja came to acquire her vampire nature. It all started years ago when Elias was a baby. Nadja, her husband Nikolai and their son were out traveling in a snowstorm, and they are having a great time until their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Nikolai goes to find help, but when he fails to return, Nadja takes her baby ventures out into the snow.
But what Nadja finds is not what she expects. She sees an old farmhouse while following Nikolai’s footprints, and since it seems abandoned, she goes inside and finds a faint trail of blood. As she follows it, she sees her dead husband and something starts to chase after her. Nadja locks herself in the basement, but the thing starts to break in through a basement window. Desperate to save herself and her child, she fights back and is able to keep the vampire outside just long enough for the sun to rise and kill it. When she looks down, however, there’s a bite-mark on her hand.
Later, during a different flashback, Nadja goes back to the old farmhouse to look for answers. There, she encounters an old and decrepit vampire who turns out to be the father of the vampire she had killed. He tries to shoot her, but Nadja is able to overpower and bludgeon him to death. But outside of that moment and the blood trail when Nikolai was killed, and Nadja the vampire origin isn’t the spatter-fest that one might expect.
It’s worth noting that there is plenty of blood later in the movie, meaning there must be a reason for having the origin the way it is. In reality, the reason is to put an emphasis on what the old vampire said. Before he died, he explained what happened to Nadja, saying that no vampire can control their lust for blood because the “evil is too strong. We are cursed. We cannot allow this evil to keep spreading.”
What he said offers context and a goal for the rest of the movie because, throughout the film, Nadja does her best to prove the old vampire wrong. However, in the end, he was right, as the evil was just too much for her to control. But, in a way, the second half of his statement was true as well. Nadja’s actions saw her save her son while keeping the other vampires on the plane, allowing Elias the chance to kill them all at once and stop the evil from spreading.
