Bleach: 10 Ways Ichigo Ruined His Likability

[ad_1]

Despite the number of jokes many other shonen protagonists get, there might not be one more polarizing than Ichigo is in Bleach. While Goku seems like his head is empty at times and part 1 Naruto is insufferable, they still are respected by most of the fan base. Ichigo is either loved or disliked by most people, not having much middle ground.

Bleach has a relatively big roster of characters, so that could play a role, but Ichigo doesn’t help matters either. While he isn’t the traditional protagonist, he has a ton of unlikable characteristics. There’s a reason some fans wonder if the series would have been better with Rukia as the main character.

10 He Nearly Throws His Life Away In An Effort To Avenge His Mother Against Grand Fisher

On one hand, it’s admirable that Ichigo was willing to do everything he could to defeat Grand Fisher after finding out the hollow killed his mother. At the same, much like Sasuke in Naruto, he was willing to throw his life away in search of vengeance, ignoring Rukia’s pleas completely and only seeing red. Ichigo failed to realize how important he was to people and that destroying Grand Fisher wasn’t worth it if it meant his family lost another member.

9 He Lacks Respect Towards His Elders & Teachers

Honorifics aren’t something Ichigo believes in, always foregoing them when talking to captains and going so far as calling Yamamoto “gramps”. While Yamamoto isn’t always the most pleasant individual to be around, how Ichigo talks to him is disrespectful. This mentality extends out beyond captains to his teachers in school, as well. They are only known as instructors to him. It makes Ichigo come off as full of himself and trying too hard to be cool.

8 Ichigo Yelling At Kenpachi For Saving Him From Death

Pride has always been an issue with Ichigo, and most of the time, it’s a reasonable character flaw. One exception was when Nnoitra showed up after Ichigo’s battle with Grimmjow and very clearly had the upper hand.

Rather than thanking Kenpachi for showing up, Ichigo cops an attitude for the captain saving him, acting as if he had the situation under control. It’s a moment that makes no sense and teeters Ichigo’s pride into a dumb level of arrogance.

7 Ichigo’s Decision To Save Orihime By Himself Rather Than Accepting His Friend’s Help

One of the worst examples of Ichigo being incredibly stubborn is his decision to rush off to Hueco Mundo by himself. It takes an immense amount of convincing to allow Ishida and Chad to go with him, even though they have as much reason to want to save Orihime as Ichigo would. It’s maddening how selfish Ichigo can come off while trying to be heroic. He’s incapable of trusting anyone else, seeing himself as the great hero who needs to swoop in and save the day.

6 How Rude He Was To The Visored When He Asked For Their Help

Hiyori, Hachi and Love

Ichigo is one of the least appreciative people in the entire series. Plenty of people go out of their way to help him and rarely ever get thanks from the resident orange-haired hero. This is painfully obvious during his training with the Visored. He seeks them out for help with controlling his inner hollow, then instead of being happy when they agree, Ichigo spends most of the training griping that things aren’t going how he wants them to.

5 His Need To Look Down On Allies Like Ganju

Ichigo’s habit of rushing off on his own and his lack of trust in others is an indication that he looks down on other people. This is shown first with Ganju, but that’s hardly the only time this attitude appears. If someone isn’t on Ichigo’s power level, he rarely ever thinks highly of them.

The same happened to Hanataro, despite him being a very skilled healer who helped Ichigo repeatedly. It’s a trait that sabotages Ichigo’s likability on more than one occasion.

4 His Willingness To Hold Back On Opponents That He Could Defeat Quickly If He Went All Out

Not only does Ichigo underestimate and look past his allies, but he also does the same thing against foes. He often feels he’s stronger than everyone, even when it’s clear he isn’t. Against Dordoni, he got knocked around at first, needing Nel’s aid because he refused to use his Bankai. Ichigo’s need to act superior and hold his power back in a fight is far too reminiscent of Goku, but at least with the Saiyan, he has the excuse of wanting to prolong the fight. Ichigo has no reason to be holding back, especially since, in that case, he’s there to save Orihime.

3 His Temper Is As Short As The Fuse To A Firecracker

Ichigo has a near-perpetual scowl, anger always simmering beneath the surface with him. Despite trying to act cool and aloof, Ichigo has a temper that explodes at a moment’s notice. He’s seen arguing with both allies and foes regularly, be it with Ganju over something completely pointless or losing it after Ulquiorra said he brought Orihime to Hueco Mundo. It makes it hard to understand how Ichigo has as many friends as he does. It’s one thing to be passionate and another to have anger issues.

2 He Becomes Depressed Anytime He Loses A Fight

For a character as confident in his abilities as Ichigo tends to be, it’s strange how little confidence he has in defeat. Far too often, he falls into depression after a single loss. It doesn’t matter how often he’s protected his friends in the past – one loss wipes that all away, forcing him to wonder if he can protect anyone at all. At first, he isn’t like this either, but after defeat at the hands of Yammy, nearly every loss causes Ichigo to question himself.

1 The Warped Sense Of Honor That Ichigo Has In Combat

Bleach Ichigo Vs Ulquiorra

On the surface, having a sense of honor is a good thing, but the way it shows up with Ichigo is equal parts confusing and foolish. Most of the time, he fails to see the consequences of his actions, fully believing he can defeat the enemy on level footing. That confidence is nice, and it works in certain situations, such as with Grimmjow. Where it lacked any sort of sanity is when he asked Ulquiorra to chop off his arm and leg so they could resume the fight on even ground. That’s no longer a sense of honor – only being selfish and reckless.
