Black Widow’s new sidekick has an incredible superpower that is killing her, but she can’t stop until the villain behind it is brought to justice.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Black Widow #10, available now from Marvel.
Since being forced to give up the only normal family that she has ever known, Natasha Romanoff has taken a deep dive into her work as a hero. Thankfully, Black Widow still has plenty of people close to her who can help her when she needs it most. Lucy, Natasha’s unexpected sidekick, has proven to be particularly adept at saving the day thanks to her own brand new superpowers. Unfortunately, the lightning in her veins is also poised to take Lucy’s life, and she can’t give it up until Apogee has been taken down.
Natasha and Yelena Belova have once again caught up to Apogee only to find themselves vastly outnumbered and underpowered in the face of his cult-like followers known as the Olio. While the Widows do their best to manage the threat at hand, Craig and Lucy are busy back at the Web preparing to enter the fray as well. Craig, a young scientist who was once part of the Olio himself, has finally developed an antidote to the serum Apogee has been distributing. With that, the two budding heroes make their way to Apogee’s lair to put an end to his reign of terror once and for all. Not only that, but Lucy can be cured of the powers that promise to kill her if she continues using them.
Black Widow #10 by Kelly Thompson, Elena Casagrande, Rafael De Latorre, Elisabetta D’Amico, Jordie Bellaire and VC’s Cory Petit sees Lucy’s journey towards becoming a full-fledged hero take another major step when she refuses the cure until the job is done. From where she sees it, there is no good reason for her to give up the powers that have already saved lives so long as she has the immediate opportunity to continue that trend. This isn’t the first time that Lucy has put herself in harm’s way in order to do the right thing, although the knowledge that using her powers might end her life paints it all in a chilling new light. It seems that Lucy’s main motivation has moved beyond just taking revenge on Apogee and instead now wants to do as much good as possible with what she has. It isn’t a decision that Craig can agree with, nor is it one that the Widows would applaud, but it is one that is easy to understand.
With any luck, this won’t turn out to be a death sentence for Lucy. Even if she can avoid using her powers to the point of causing herself harm, there is still the fact that she is walking straight into the middle of a firefight with Apogee himself. Assuming she survives the experience, there is good reason to believe Lucy will become a more permanent fixture in Black Widow’s life as the hero she is clearly meant to be.
