While an out-of-date My Little Pony doll appearing in Black Widow may be a mistake, it could also be hinting at timeline changes caused by Endgame.
Fans have always been able to spot the most minute details in movies, many of which even the production team didn’t notice. For example, in the recent Black Widow movie, fans spotted a My Little Pony doll that technically shouldn’t exist. While this could be dismissed as a simple mistake, it could actually be a hint to something much more impactful to the world, carried over from the events of Avengers: Endgame.
During the opening of Black Widow, young Natasha and her spy family desperately flee to Cuba to escape S.H.I.E.L.D. Here, Natasha and Yelena are taken to begin their grueling training to become Widows. During the scene, their father Red Guardian is holding a doll brought for Yelena, and this is where fans spotted the mistake.
The doll Red Guardian is holding is the character Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Although My Little Pony toys came about during the 1980s, the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic show didn’t air until 2010. Given the Black Widow scene’s 90s timeframe, there’s no way the doll should exist. While this could be written off as a simple mistake, theories suggest the doll could signify something greater.
During Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark figures out the key to time travel. Realizing they can go back in time and borrow some Infinity Stones, the Avengers spread out across time and space to grab them. Although each of them was careful not to affect anything in the timelines, that doesn’t mean they didn’t make any ripples. The very fact that they’re existing in the past means there could be huge snowball effects that change the future, especially since many of them talk and interact with the people in the past.
Steve Rogers and Tony Stark both travel to Camp Lehigh in the 1970s for the Space Stone. And given how fragile time is, it’s not out of the question that one of them did something that subtly altered the future. For example, inspiring the creation of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic during the 90s.
Since the introduction of time travel, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s shows and movies have not been shying away from the effects and manipulation of timelines. While What If…? showed the vast amounts of variation in the multiverse, Loki delved deepest into the effects of time travel. When Loki ended up at the Time Variance Authority, he learned that they remove any branches from the “Sacred Timeline,” such as him stealing the Tesseract when he shouldn’t have.
Although the TVA strictly removes any variations in time, that doesn’t mean any subtle changes aren’t allowed to happen. The fact that the timeline wasn’t removed after the Avengers time-travelled in Endgame means that it was always meant to happen, being planned by the timeline creator Kang himself. And so if any ripples in time were caused by the Avengers, such as creating an earlier Friendship is Magic, it simply means that it was always meant to happen.
Either way, it would seem Black Widow‘s small out-of-place detail has no major effects on the larger world, other than maybe creating the existence of Bronies twenty years too early. However, it doesn’t mean the doll has no importance. It shows that any small adjustments to the main MCU timeline could happen, which could then snowball into bigger impacts than once thought. And with the multiverse beginning to cross over in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it seems like anything will soon be possible. Marvel is definitely not shying away from major time-altering impacts to the Sacred Timeline.
