Black Manta Writer Was Pleased With the Villain’s Portrayal in Aquaman Film

Eisner Award-winning writer Chuck Brown was won over by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta in DC’s Aquaman film, calling the character ‘amazing.’

Black Manta’s big-screen debut made a splash with Eisner and Ringo award-winning author Chuck Brown, who is writing Black Manta’s adventures in a new DC series.

In a recent roundtable discussion with CBR, the Bitter Root author spoke about how Black Manta’s appearance in 2018’s Aquaman film furthered his love of the villain. Brown said “it was so well done. Black Manta and his father were amazing… I thought that everything about him in the movie was amazing, and it just fueled my obsession with the character even more.” Brown has been able to translate this passion for the villain into his work on the current Black Manta title.

Announced in June, Black Manta is a six-issue miniseries that teams Brown with artist Valentine De Landro and colorist Marissa Louise. It follows Manta as he pursues a rare metal with devastating potential. While Brown has stressed the series is “not a redemption story for Black Manta,” it does present the character in a new light as he is forced to evolve in order to overcome new challenges. These ideas echo what Brown enjoyed about the villain in Aquaman. “I loved the story of his grandfather, who was an escaped slave and became a sea pirate in order to survive,” he said. “That just blew my mind.”

2022 looks to be a big year for the Aquaman franchise, as DC and Warner Bros. prepare for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Star Jason Momoa recently showed off his new blue costume that draws inspiration from the comics. Black Manta actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been seen hitting the gym, promising that he’ll be in fighting shape for his big-screen return.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to Aquaman: King of Atlantis, an animated miniseries being produced by director James Wan that is set to debut as part of the upcoming ACME Night animation block on Cartoon Network in the fall of 2021. DC also has a myriad of miniseries planned with Aquaman’s friends and foes, including Brown’s Black Manta book, as well as Aquaman: The Becoming and Deep Target, the latter of which see Aquaman team-up with Green Arrow for an adventure that spins out of their mutual 80th anniversaries.

In addition to his work on Black Manta, Chuck Brown is the co-creator of Bitter Root, an Image Comics series that highlights black and African culture. The series debuted in 2018 to critical acclaim and has since gone on to win multiple awards, including the 2020 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series. A film adaptation is currently being produced with Academy Award-winner Regina King set to direct.
