Although The Suicide Squad doesn’t properly showcase Savant’s skills, the forthcoming Black Canary film, on HBO Max, could change that.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The Suicide Squad, now playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
A recent announcement confirms that Jurnee Smollett is returning as Dinah Lance/Black Canary in a brand new movie for HBO Max. While not much is known about the plot, the DC Extended Universe has done a great job setting up a detailed history for the character. One example is the appearance of Savant in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. While he met an untimely end in the film’s opening, the new Black Canary project could be the perfect opportunity for him to get his due.
The comic book version of Savant is not only proficient in martial arts and computer hacking, he also acts as Black Canary’s adversary. However, as a side-effect of his intellectual capacity, he has a non-linear memory that leaves him prone to forgetfulness. While his abilities aren’t fully displayed in The Suicide Squad, Savant is still an expert marksman and hand-to-hand combatant. This is shown when he’s introduced killing a canary by ricocheting a racquetball around his cell.
In The Suicide Squad, Savant sees most of Task Force X massacred, and he flees in terror, but his escape is short-lived as Amanda Waller sets off the explosive in his head. In a shot of poetic justice, a canary picks at his head as he lays in the water. This could be seen as an allusion to his comic history with Black Canary, with the hero potentially sending Savant to Belle Reve prison. His animosity in killing the bird also teases a deep-seated grudge he has against the hero that was sadly never explored.
While Savant never got his time to shine in The Suicide Squad, the new Black Canary project could see him as a formidable adversary for the hero. The film could be operating in the same continuity as Birds of Prey, which means Canary has been an active hero with Huntress and Renee Montoya for over a year. In that time, she could have accumulated her own dangerous list of rogues, including Savant.
Should her project decide to be a prequel to Gunn’s film, Savant would be a great antagonist to Canary. While she’s a great fighter and metahuman, Savant offers a very different threat than what Black Mask was capable of. By facing off against him, Dinah would have to reformat her strategy to outsmart a villain who is already a skilled fighter and tactician. By the end of the movie, fans would be able to see just how she was able to defeat him and put him on a path that ends with a nanite explosive.
However, even if Savant isn’t the main villain in her film, he could be a great enemy to explore in flashbacks. After being with the Birds of Prey, fans could see the various enemies she and her team faced, including Savant. Not only would that help establish how much more skilled she has become as a vigilante, but it would also give Savant enough time to prove why he was chosen for Task Force X. Through these flashbacks, the film could even set him up as a longtime rival who Dinah always comes back to until she eventually gets the upper hand.
Savant may be a little-known villain in the DC Universe, but his appearance in The Suicide Squad shows his vast potential to be just as threatening as the likes of Deadshot and Bloodsport. However, with his demise in The Suicide Squad, the best chance for him to reappear is in the upcoming Black Canary project. In doing so, he would finally get to show off what he’s capable of.
The Suicide Squad is playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max now.
