Referencing a Batman cover he drew over three decades ago, Bill Sienkiewicz has drawn an homage to his own work for a variant cover of The Joker #5.
Artist Bill Sienkiewicz created an homage to his own artwork for an upcoming variant cover for The Joker #5.
Exclusive to Michigan retailer State of Comics, Sienkiewicz’s variant features Joker, Batman and Punchline in an image reminiscent of his painting 35 years ago for the cover of Batman #400.
Sienkiewicz’s homage to himself continues the trend set by Neal Adams, who drew previous variants for issues 1 – 4 of The Joker, all riffing off of covers he had illustrated decades prior.
State of Comics shared a comparison of Sienkiewicz’s covers on social media and said the artist had stepped in for Adams for Issue #5. Adams is taking time off to recover from recent health issues, according to a post on his Facebook page.
Released in 1986, Batman #400 was a 68-page anniversary special featuring a tale where Ra’s al Ghul assembled a wide variety of rogues to test Batman’s mettle.
With an introduction by Stephen King, a script by longtime Batman writer Doug Moench, and art by a wide variety of creators, the issue was notable as the last appearance of the Pre-Crisis version of Batman. The Caped Crusader would be rebooted during Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC’s brand-wide, continuity-changing event of 1985 and ’86.
The Joker #5, written by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg with art by Francesco Francavilla, is available now for $5.99.
