Since HBO Max is always releasing dozens of TV shows a month, it’s hard to decide what to pick from its library and where to even start. Here’s a list of the best new shows HBO Max has to offer in the month of February.
Euphoria Shimmers With Tears in Season 2
Euphoria tones back on the glitter and ups the drama in its second season. The stellar cast, including Emmy award-winning Zendaya, returns to explore high school, sex, drugs and friendship while focusing more on side characters and their stories. Fezco, Lexi, Cal and Cassie take the front seat as their inner demons push them to the point of chaotic and soul-bending speeches that will change lives forever. Season 2 is taking its time to tell its story, but does answer the biggest questions regarding Season 1’s finale.

The Righteous Gemstones Shows an Ugly Side in Season 2
Hits such as Succession on HBO help newcomer The Righteous Gemstones find its place in the world of television. There’s nothing more grueling and entertaining than black-comedy dramas about powerful families whose fight for dominance ends up destroying them. This wealthy family of televangelists returns to HBO Max to carry out their sins and keep their reputation squeaky clean, while also preaching against said sins and performing dirty deeds on the down-low.

Peacemaker Makes Peace With Its Absurdity
HBO Max has had DC TV shows before, but it has never seemed to compete with the likes of Disney+ Marvel shows such as WandaVision and Hawkeye. But when the DC Extended Universe brought over Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn to direct The Suicide Squad, the game changed for the DCEU forever. It was hard to get on board with the most hated character from The Suicide Squad getting their own show, but John Cena’s Peacemaker is a hilarious mess to watch on screen.

Somebody Somewhere Has a Tender Touch on Humanity
Somebody Somewhere is for those small-town folks who struggle to fit the mold their town expects them to. The show stars Bridget Everett — who the show’s story is based on — as a Kansan who is grieving the death of her sister while trying to find her place in the world. Her mid-life crisis makes for some tear-jerking moments, but its comedic effect also doesn’t let the show take itself too seriously. It may not be HBO Max’s biggest February success, but it was just renewed for another season, so it’s doing something right.

Raised by Wolves Steps Back into Ridley Scott’s World With Season 2
Raised by Wolves was one of HBO Max’s biggest successes in 2020, much thanks to Ridley Scott’s name attached to it. The sci-fi series has found its place in Scott’s legacy of extraordinary films such as Alien and Prometheus by exploring the bigger questions of humanity through a couple of androids. Season 2 returns more vigorous than ever with its religious conflicts explored alongside a gorgeous cinematography that introduces a new world of possibilities — one of which excludes parenthood, which the show has basically defined as impossible.

Chuck Finds a New Home at HBO Max
Before Zachary Levi was Shazam, he was computer-whiz-turned-spy Chuck Bartowski. After leaving Prime Video, Chuck now lives in HBO Max’s library as a hidden gem. This comedy-spy show features Chuck as his life turns upside down when a visual copy of the CIA and National Security Agency’s merged databased is embedded into his brain, and two agents are tasked with investigating it. It’s pretty standard for mid to late 2000s’ TV characteristics, which occasional bad graphics and overly sexualized female characters, but its well worth a watch for a funny spy story.
All five seasons of Chuck are available to stream on HBO Max.
Rick and Morty’s Antics Are Back with Season 5
Rick and Morty are back and better than ever in Season 5, and subscribers of HBO Max have all the entertainment at their disposal. The fifth season of Adult Swim’s animated series aired its run last year, but is now finally reaching streaming services, including HBO Max. Season 6 of the show is in production and expected to air in 2022, and Season 7 is also in early development.

And Just Like That… Is There After Finishing Sex and the City
Almost 20 years after Sex and the City‘s final episode, HBO decided to reboot the series on its new streaming platform. And Just Like That… brings back most of the classic characters from the original for 10 episodes, with Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbs and Chris Noth reprising their characters. With new characters and new drama, the Sex and the City franchise has proven it will do anything to live out its cinematic dream. And Just Like That… is perfect for those who miss the original series and the movies, but maybe it should be the stopping point for these characters.

The Girl Before Is Short, But Hair-Raising
This four part series starring Loki‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw follows a young woman who begins living in an incredible minimalist house, but finds the house holds many mysteries surrounding the couple that lived in it before her. The house’s odd rules — such as little to no personal items and no children — set the stage for the house’s spell-binding curse that brings up the two women’s past trauma, which strangely makes them more alike than they think.
The Girl Before is set to premiere on Feb. 10 on HBO Max.
John Oliver Returns With Last Week Tonight Season 9
HBO’s golden ticket to the late night-talk show game is making its return to add satirical commentary on popular culture, politics and news in the world. If viewers of Last Week Tonight‘s popular YouTube channel want to watch the extended version of its videos, they can head on over to HBO Max to stream every season, including its newest one.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver returns to HBO Max on Feb. 20. New episodes air on Sundays at 11 p.m. EST, only on HBO.
