Dwayne Johnson has spent more than a decade wowing audiences thanks to his magnetic personality and ability to win over a crowd. While his early years are best known for his time in the WWE as The Rock, he has since grown past his time as a wrestler to become one of Hollywood’s most entertaining and multi-talented actors. Whether he’s singing, making people laugh, or using his strength to his advantage, Johnson always brings his own personal touch to every role.
However, with so many movies under his belt since he started acting in the early 2000s, it’s hard to decipher which ones are a worthwhile experience. With Jungle Cruise in theaters and streaming on Disney+ Premier Access, now seems like a great time to look back at The Rock’s best-scored films on Rotten Tomatoes. The list also spans the many genres Johnson has been a part of, as well as where to watch these movies.
Central Intelligence
Central Intelligence is a 2016 comedy starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. The film follows Hart’s character, Calvin Joyner, as he reunites with his old classmate, Bob Stone/Robbie Weirdicht (Johnson), who was once an overweight kid in school but has since become a fit CIA agent. Hart and Johnson play off each other with amazing comedic timing that helps carry the film. But underneath the jokes is a story about friendship that highlights how bullying can affect a person decades after an incident.
Central Intelligence is available to rent or purchase on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
Fast Five
Fast Five, the fifth entry in the Fast & Furious franchise, marks a huge tonal shift for the saga as it finds Dominic Toretto and his family on the run in Brazil and planning a major heist. The film also introduces Diplomatic Security Services agent Luke Hobbs, who Johnson plays with a stern gaze as he moves heaven and earth to apprehend Dom and his crew. As someone who is by-the-books and only bends the rules when he has to, Hobbs makes for a perfect foil to the movie’s cavalier protagonists.
Fast Five is free to watch on Peacock and available to purchase or rent on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
Fast & Furious 6
Fast & Furious 6 not only sees Dom and his crew return for another white-knuckle adventure, but it also features the reappearance of Johnson’s Luke Hobbs. Rather than being an enemy, Hobbs returns to enlist the aid of Toretto and his crew to apprehend ex-special operations soldier turned criminal Owen Shaw. While Hobbs is working with the crew, his disdain for working with criminals is obvious but ultimately makes for a great team-up between him and Dom in the climax.
Fast & Furious 6 is available to purchase or rent on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
Furious 7
Furious 7 picks up after the sixth installment and follows Owen Shaw’s even deadlier brother, Deckard Shaw. Shaw orchestrates a clever revenge scheme against Dom and his crew, leading to Luke Hobbs being severely injured and hospitalized. While he isn’t in the film much, Johnson makes each moment count, including an awesome shot of him breaking out of his cast to help Dom and his crew. Hobbs ensures that if he is going to help, he will pull his weight and then some, bringing a mini-gun to a street fight in an awesome display of power. Hobbs and Shaw later appear in an equally entertaining spin-off that expands the Fast & Furious universe.
Furious 7 is available to purchase or rent on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
Fighting With My Family
Fighting With My Family tells the story of Saraya Knight and her journey to professional wrestling stardom as the WWE superstar Paige. The film shows Saraya working closely with Dwayne Johnson during his time as The Rock and how he joins her on some of the most memorable moments of her career. Fighting with My Family features a lot of heart and has Johnson showing some of his most famous WWE lines like “Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?” and sees him taking on a mentor role.
Fighting with my Family is a great sports film with inspiring moments and is available to purchase and rent on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
Following the iconic original film starring the late Robin Williams, Jumanji returned with a brand new cast and premise with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Rather than a board game, Jumanji is now a video game that takes four kids into its world as four game avatars, including Johnson as the muscular adventurer Dr. Smolder Bravestone. Johnson manages to perfectly capture a teenager who is granted an opportunity to be a hero without the delivery coming off too corny or out of touch. At the same time, he also fits perfectly in the film’s adventure setting and offers fun for all ages.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle can be purchased or rented on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
Jumanji: The Next Level
Jumanji: The Next Level sees Johnson and the rest of the crew return, but instead of playing the same character, Johnson’s avatar is instead taken over by Danny DeVito. With half of the kids from the previous movie in the game and the other half on the outside, the sequel turns the tables in a hilarious fashion while also letting Johnson and his co-star Kevin Hart do their best impressions of DeVito and Danny Glover to hilarious effect.
Jumanji: The Next Level is available to stream on Starz or to purchase on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
Moana
One of Johnson’s most unique and successful movies, Disney’s animated film Moana has The Rock voicing Maui, a demigod who helps Moana on her quest to save her home and people. As Maui, Johnson lets his cockiness shine as he plays up the character’s status by acting like one of the best deities around. However, behind the boasting is an individual with a lot of heart and flaws that create a layered hero. Johnson also gets to “flex” his singing muscles and show off another aspect of his talents.
Moana is available to stream on Disney+ or to rent on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
