Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal will reportedly reprise their roles for a sequel to director Gavin O’Connor’s 2016 action film The Accountant.
The Accountant has been confirmed for a sequel.
Director of the original 2016 film, which starred Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, a forensic accountant with a penchant for vigilantism, Gavin O’Connor revealed the news in an interview on CinemaBlend’s ReelBlend podcast. “There will not be a Way Back sequel, but we are doing an Accountant sequel,” he said. “We literally just closed that deal. We’re doing The Accountant again.”
O’Connor was there to discuss his recent film, The Way Back, which came out in 2020 and also starred Affleck as former basketball star Jack Cunningham. O’Connor confirmed that part of the reason for an Accountant sequel was to give Jon Bernthal, who played Christian’s long-lost brother Braxton in the first film, more screen time, a bigger role. The other part was that a second movie might inevitably lead to a third, which would focus more on the brothers’ relationship, seemingly confirming Affleck’s return to the budding franchise.
“Yeah. Yeah. So, I’ve always wanted to do three because what, the second one’s going to be more with — we’re going to integrate his brother into the story. So there’ll be more screen time for Bernthal in the second one,” O’Connor said. “And then the third movie’s going to be, I call it, ‘Rain Man on steroids.’ The third movie is going to be the two brothers, this odd couple. The third one is going be a buddy picture.”
The Accountant, which came out the same year that Affleck starred as Batman/Bruce Wayne in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, follows Affleck’s Christian Wolff, a mathematics savant who works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminals, known only by his alter-ego, The Accountant. The film’s cast also included J.K. Simmons, Cynthia Addai-Robinson and Anna Kendrick. Bernthal’s role in the film was relatively small, playing an unnamed hitman who targets arrogant billionaires before it is revealed that he is Wolff’s brother.
Neither Affleck not Bernthal have confirmed their roles in The Accountant sequel. Currently, Affleck is set to reprise his role as Batman in Warner Bros. and DC Films’ The Flash. He was confirmed to appear in the film in August 2020, and recently released set photos feature a possible stunt double wearing a Batfleck cowl and belt on a motorcycle. The DC Film is set to arrive in theaters on Nov. 4.
