Beeple, Bored Apes, JunkBunnies and the NFT Boom

NFTs are still a very new phenomenon but are becoming increasingly popular with art collectors, including those that would have previously sought to collect traditional art.

Before introducing JunkBunnies; an NFT collection on the gas-free Polygon network, let’s explore NFTs and their success to date.

Kevin McCoy minted his non-fungible token “Quantum” in 2014, long before the crypto art market exploded in 2017 with dedicated marketplaces; OpenSea, MakersPlace, SuperRare, and Foundation allowing collectors and creators to easily buy and sell art, typically using the cryptocurrencies: Ethereum, Polygon and more recently Solano.

Sotheby’s auction house recently raked in $1.4 million for the sale of Kevin McCoy’s “Quantum.” However, such a sale is just the tip of the iceberg. Digital artist Mike Winkelmann, a.k.a Beeple, the creator of “Everydays: The First 5000 Days,” has recently seen his blockchain digital artwork (NFT) sell for over $69 million by London-based auction house “Christie’s,” making him one of the most valuable living artists in the world.

NFTs allow easy transfer of ownership using the blockchain. Every transfer is recorded and cannot be destroyed. And proof of ownership of an NFT can have ongoing benefits, such as access to a private network, the Metaverse, and NFT freebies. And if you are lucky enough to own a Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT you are granted access to Ape Fest, a once a year-4 day-New York-based festival dedicated to the BAYC collection. But that’s nothing in comparison to selling your Bored Ape for $3.41 Million (891 ETH) after minting it for around $200 (0.08 Eth) which is what the owner of Bored Ape #8817  did in 2021.

There are many opportunities in the NFT world for existing collectors and newcomers.  the Goblintown collection released in May 2022 is a perfect example of NFTs continuing to thrive. GoblinTown Goblins are now worth a floor price of over $4 thousand (2.79 ETH).

“JunkBunnies” is a recently launched (June 2022) art project on the Polygon network, centered around 10 thousand collectible, unique, and totally dope characters that love to recycle junk. The line work and vivid colors truly make the JunkBunny NFT collection stand out. Additionally, a JunkBunny is transferred with rarely provided commercial rights, a feature of sale that was famously provided with each Bored Ape, and said to be the reason for BAYC’s popularity in comparison to similar collections released in 2021 and prior.

The creator (JunkZen) decided to launch JunkBunnies on the ever-increasing in popularity Polygon network. Unlike the Ethereum network which can charge over $100 in gas fees at peak times, the Polygon network charges almost 0 gas fees. This allowing newby NFT collectors to participate in the JunkBunny mint without a massive additional fee being sprung on them.

Programmatically created from over 280 hand-drawn traits, JunkBunnies are perfect for any collector looking to add more cartoon-style NFTs to their gallery. At the time of writing, the NFT community has already minted 219 of these characters; available to view and buy on OpenSea.

On the whole, NFTs have made a positive impact on the art market, creating an outlet for creatives and collectors.  Inevitably the NFT market will continue to grow with the increasing uptake of cryptocurrencies, online gaming, and the Metaverse.
