With soldiers turning on him and his torture of the defenseless Nyx and assault on the Maximal Axalon backfiring, this is unluckiest Megatron ever.
Across the Transformers franchise, there’s perhaps no name more feared than that of Megatron. The leader of the Decepticons and sometimes Predacons, Megatron has been the bane of the existence of all heroic Cybertronians since 1984. His plans have wrought untold damage and deaths across the eons, making his reputation as an Emperor of Destruction more than fitting.
The same can not be said, however, for the portrayal of the Beast Wars Megatron in the IDW comic book reboot. With his soldiers turning on him left and right and even his torture of the defenseless Nyx and assault on the Maximal Axalon backfiring, this is easily the unluckiest Megatron ever. Here are all the ways in which the latest issue of the series gives Megatron a particularly bad day.
Megatron’s Defeat
The first major battle against the Maximals had heretofore been a fairly mixed battle, with both sides getting in some good hits. Even Megatron himself fairs exceptionally well, towering over Optimus Primal and mercilessly fighting him. The side begins to turn, however, when former Predacon Dinobot enters the fray. Released from his holding cell by Nyx, Dinobot begins to take down his former comrades.
Once the Axalon’s shields are restored and the Predacons are forced away, they begin to gang up on Dinobot. Unfortunately for them, the Maximal ship has long-range defenses as well, with Megatron in particular caught in the crossfire. With no hope of truly winning the battle, Megatron orders the other Predacons to retreat.
Betrayal of the Predacons
This is a disastrous turn of events for Megatron, who hadn’t been having the best go of things, anyway. As mentioned, Nyx literally falling into the Predacons’ hands and being tortured backfired, as she not only escaped, but her brutal treatment caused Dinobot to defect to the Maximals. While Megatron and Tarantulas were only able to ascertain some information from Nyx, Dinobot left their side knowing almost all of their information and agendas.
Dinobot’s defection was a particularly low blow, namely due to the warrior’s strength, cunning and valor. None of the other Predacons besides maybe Skold are nearly as formiddable in battle, and Dinobot almost convinced her to leave, too. Given that Megatron seems to be ruling the Predacons mainly out of fear, it’s unlikely that his troops respect him too much at this point.
Then there’s the fact that so many of said troops are already plotting against their leader. As in the series, Tarantulas and Terrorsaur both have their own agendas, neither of which involve Megatron having any authority over them. Tarantulas would seem to share his show incarnation’s ties to the Tripedacus Council, which explains why he wishes to go off on his own and undermine Megatron. Likewise, Terrorsaur is the Starscream equivalent of Beast Wars, planning to overthrow Megatron and rule the Predacons himself. That has stayed the same in the new comics, but Megatron’s usual knack for villainy definitely hasn’t. Hopefully in future issues, Megatron fares better against the Maximals and begins to actually strike fear into the sparks of both his enemies and his underlings.
