Batwoman: Who Is Professor Pyg?

[ad_1]

The latest episode of Batwoman introduced one of Batman’s most disturbed foes to the Arrowverse.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batwoman Season 3, Episode 5, “A Lesson From Professor Pyg,” which aired Wednesday, Nov. 10 on The CW.

The latest villain to terrorize Batwoman‘s Gotham City is Lazlo Valentin, better known as Professor Pyg. He takes Ryan Wilder and her family hostage while wearing his iconic pig mask, but his backstory and motives as established in the show are very different from the comic book version.

In the comics, Professor Pyg is a disturbed scientist who leads a group called the Circus of Strange. After being recruited by the group Black Glove, he and his group arrive in Gotham City and begin kidnapping people to perform surgery on them. Pyg’s ultimate goal is to create an army of “perfect” mutilated minions that he calls Dollotrons.

Batwoman‘s version of Professor Pyg is first introduced as a chef who flew in from Metropolis to cook dinner for Ryan, Jada and Marquis. Although he initially seems like an ordinary chef, his insanity is revealed when he begins talking to the head of a pig he is preparing. Later in the night, Pyg reveals himself after killing Marquis’ date and poisoning Ryan and the Jets.

Taking off his mask, Pyg reveals his backstory: he is a former chef for Jeturian who was fired without warning, causing his life to go down a spiral that included his wife divorcing him and taking their kids. Ever since then, he has developed an obsession with Jada, and orchestrated events so that he would be able to kill her and her family.

Ryan stabs Professor Pyg in the leg and the family manages to escape to one of Jada’s saferooms, but the madman begins building a bomb to blow up the house. He later manages to capture Ryan after she leaves the saferoom to try and get insulin for Marquis. This leads to a showdown between Pyg and the Jets which ends with Marquis brutally stabbing the villain to death.

Pyg’s death in this episode seems to disprove theories that he would be operating as a member of Batwoman‘s version of Black Glove. However, the ending of “A Lesson From Professor Pyg” reveals that Pyg’s fellow Circus of Strange member Flamingo has been on a murder spree, so it seems that Pyg’s brand of madness will continue to live on, despite his brutal death.

New episodes of Batwoman air Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
