The new Batman villain Abyss will use the Dark Knight’s greatest strength against him by striking from the shadows, says writer Joshua Williamson.
The next great Batman villain will be able to use one of the Dark Knight’s greatest strengths against him.
In an exclusive interview with CBR, writer Joshua Williamson dove into the dirty details on his upcoming Batman run with artist Jorge Molina. Their first storyline will be titled “Abyss” and is named after the Dark Knight’s latest villain. Like Batman, Abyss lurks in the gloomy corners of Gotham and uses the shadows as part of his arsenal while fighting. Speaking on creating a new face of fear for the Caped Crusader to face off against, Williamson said, “With Abyss, I really wanted to create a character who could utilize the dark in the way Batman does. One of Batman’s greatest assets and weapons is to move within the dark and use it as a tool to scare people and manipulate situations. A big piece of Batman is the idea of the darkness.”
Williamson, who famously co-created Godspeed in his first Flash storyline, wanted to accomplish a similar feat with Abyss in Batman. “What if I created a villain who also knew how to do that and use the dark in a different way and kind of stole that from Batman to use against him,” he pondered. This darkness will surround every facet of Abyss, as the character’s identity will be kept from readers when he first appears. “It’s definitely a mystery,” Williamson added. “I think people will be surprised by what’s going on with Abyss.”
Though Williamson and Molina will be debuting their dark creation in Batman #118, the pair also plan to integrate some classic elements of Batman’s lore into the series. In addition to a number of villains who will feature into their first arc, Williamson and Molina will be resurrecting Batman Incorporated. Originally created by Grant Morrison, the return of Batman, Inc. will play an important part in Batman’s decision to leave Gotham City.
Before Batman can prepare for his fight against Abyss, the Dark Knight will have to survive Fear State. This massive storyline sees the Dark Knight fighting against the power of the Magistrate and his would-be replacement, Peacekeeper-01. After the Scarecrow unleashes a deadly fear toxin across Gotham, the Magistrate creates a police state to protect the citizens — against their will. The arc will be the last for longtime Gotham-based writer James Tynion IV, who will be leaving the Bat-family to focus on creator-owned comics for the foreseeable future.
At the same time as Williamson and Molina’s tenure on Batman begins, Detective Comics will be home to the 12-part storyline Shadows of the Bat. When the Dark Knight departs his home turf, his closest allies unite to address the lingering damage done during Fear State. But when Arkham Tower is built to replace the infamous Asylum, they’ll have to infiltrate the madhouse to save Gotham City from itself. The storyline will be written by Mariko Tamaki and drawn by Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, Max Raynor, Amancay Nahuelpan and Jordie Bellaire.
