Batman’s Battle for the Cowl Proved Who the Best Robin Was Before Titans

[ad_1]

The third season of Titans will see the Red Hood facing Nightwing, but Battle for the Cowl settled long ago which of them is truly the best Robin.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of Titans Season 3, streaming now on HBO Max.

Season 3 of Titans brings the Red Hood to live-action, with Curran Walters’ Jason Todd being transformed into the famous anti-hero through a combined adaptation of the Batman storylines “A Death in the Family” and “Under the Hood.” With Bruce Wayne (Iain Glen) only a supporting character, the series instead focuses more on the rivalry between Jason and his surrogate brother Dick Grayson/Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites). Jason’s lethal new skills and weapons have proven to be a challenge for Dick to overcome but comic book history suggests there can only be one winner when the two former Robins reach their final duel.

In the comics, only a few years after “Under the Hood” was published, Bruce was presumed dead following a confrontation with Darkseid in Final Crisis. Batman: Battle for the Cowl was a subsequent three-issue mini-series by Tony S. Daniel, Sandu Florea, Ian Hannin, Jared K. Fletcher, and J.D. Smith released in 2009, in which Gotham is in chaos and various contenders attempt to take up the mantle of Batman. One of these was Jason, who served as the series’ main antagonist.

Jason operated as Batman just as he did as the Red Hood, using firearms and lethal force against criminals, tactics that Bruce and the rest of the Bat-Family are vehemently against. During a confrontation with Dick and Damian Wayne he shot the latter, nearly killing him. Tim Drake then began operating as Batman, and worked with Catwoman to track Jason to his makeshift Batcave, where Jason ambushed them. After Catwoman was knocked unconscious, the two former Robins faced off, with their fight ending when Jason stabbed Tim in the chest with a Batarang.

In the series’ final issue Dick battled Jason after attempts to reason with him failed. Their fight ended with Dick the victor and Jason presumed dead. By continuously reaching out to Jason despite his unhinged actions, Dick showed that he is superior, not only in skill level but also as a hero. This helped Dick to finally take up the mantle of Batman, with Damian as his Robin.

It can be assumed that Titans‘ version of Dick and Jason’s feud will play out differently. While Bruce did challenge Dick to “be a better Batman,” the series is taking this figuratively, with Dick trying to be a more effective, moral crime fighter.

It also seems unlikely that either Dick or Jason will don a Bat-suit any time soon on the show, especially considering how recently they transitioned to Nightwing and Red Hood, respectfully. While his disturbed adopted brother poses a serious threat, it’s still a safe bet that Dick will come out on top if their feud becomes physical.
