Batman & Robin star Alicia Silverstone, who played Batgirl in the 1997 blockbuster, reveals she’s open to reprising the role in a future project.
Actor Alicia Silverstone recently confirmed she is open to reprise the role of Batgirl, who she played in 1997’s Batman & Robin.
In an interview with Comic Book Movie, Silverstone was asked if she would consider donning Barbara Gordon’s cape and cowl again. The actor expressed she was “open to whatever the world brings [her].” She added, “I’ll see what happens and flow.”
Actors revisiting their superhero past appears to be all the rage in Hollywood right now. DC Films’ The Flash will see Michael Keaton back as Batman for the first time since Batman Returns hit cinemas in 1992, with the Oscar-nominated star also locked in to appear as the Dark Knight in Batgirl, too. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios and Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home introduced the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield incarnations of Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
These films take advantage of superhero comics’ multiverse concept: a storytelling device that employs alternate dimensions to allow different versions of iconic superheroes to co-exist and even interact with each other. This lets studios pick and choose when to employ established continuity and when to break from it. For example, both The Flash and Batgirl will take place in DC Films’ DC Extended Universe shared universe, whereas Matt Reeves’ upcoming effort The Batman will be a standalone affair that isn’t attached to the wider DCEU.
For some actors, reprising their superhero roles is about more than just picking up a tidy paycheck. Andrew Garfield has previously spoken about how he signed on for Spider-Man: No Way Home once he realized the catharsis it would give audiences after the tragic finale of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Garfield explained, “You suddenly get into this incredible cosmic, meant-to-be destined moment where I get to heal the worst trauma in my life while simultaneously saving my little brother from having to experience that same trauma.”
Batman & Robin is widely regarded as one of the worst superhero movies of all time, and Silverstone’s turn as Barbara Gordon (Wilson in the film) and her costumed alter-ego Batgirl isn’t counted among her best performances. The poor critical reception of the film resulted in the cancellation of Batman Unchained, the planned fourth instalment in Warner Bros.’ original Batman film saga.
