Batman Preview Shows Poison Ivy Could Cause Another Version of a Major Storyline

[ad_1]

Poison Ivy’s powers are great enough to rock Gotham’s foundations to their core a la the earthquake of No Man’s Land, Batman #115 reveals.

Poison Ivy’s strength has grown to the point where she may very well cause a repeat of the traumatic earthquake that leveled Gotham City for a year in Batman: No Man’s Land.

Ivy’s power is revealed in a new preview for Batman #115, continuing the Fear State storyline embroiling all of DC’s Bat Family books. Simon Saint, the head of Saint Industries who has slowly taken over Gotham from behind the scenes thanks to his Peacekeeper technology, is suffering from a breakdown at the loss of his assistant, Ricardo. As he falls into hysterics, information comes in pertaining to Poison Ivy’s ever-evolving abilities. Currently holed up in an underground series of tunnels beneath Gotham, Ivy has created a nature haven for herself and her followers — and if she unleashes the full extent of her skills, she could cause the entire city to collapse, just as it did after the No Man’s Land earthquake.

No Man’s Land was a transformative event that ran in the Batman books in 1999 as a follow-up to the story Cataclysm, which saw the city hit with an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale. The quake decimated Gotham and the surrounding environs. The United States government evacuated most civilians before declaring the rest of the ruined metropolis a “No Man’s Land.” Gotham was carved up by the city’s criminal element, with Joker, Penguin, Two-Face and other rogues claiming territories as their own. The end of the event saw Gotham re-integrated into the United States and the Batman mythos permanently transformed, introducing characters like Cassandra Cain and Harley Quinn and climaxing in the tragic death of Commissioner Gordon’s wife at the time, Sarah Essen.

Poison Ivy’s characterization, in particular, shifted during No Man’s Land from that of a full-on antagonist into more of a sympathetic character. Following the earthquake, Ivy established a safe haven in one of Gotham’s parks in the “Fruit of the Earth” storyline. Ivy cared for orphaned children in her park, and even worked with Batman to defeat Clayface. She has been depicted in more of an antiheroic light ever since.

Ivy most recently transformed into two separate personalities and bodies, one of which is more innocent while the other, known as Queen Ivy, is filled with cynicism and disregard for human life. Queen Ivy is the version currently lurking under Gotham’s streets, as well as the one Harley Quinn and the Gardener — Ivy’s old beaus — seek to redeem.

Written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Jorge Jimenez, Batman #115 goes on sale Oct. 19 from DC.
