Batman Just Revealed He Has TWO Real Super Abilities

During a mission with the Justice League on Apokolips, Batman revealed that he has two physical abilities that are almost superhuman.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Justice League: Last Ride #3 by Chip Zdarsky, Miguel Mendonca, Enrica Angiolini and Andworld Design, on sale now.

Batman has always been the “normal” one on the Justice League, as normal as a hero can be, anyway. He’s somehow the most mortal, yet capable of being more than human at the same time. And in Justice League: Last Ride #3, he revealed that, despite appearances, he does actually have some impressive abilities of his own, even if they’re just short of superhuman.

He can’t lift a car over his head or compel people to speak the truth, but he can regulate his sleep and dreaming cyclops with absolute control. Batman revealed that he can fall asleep in seven seconds and only needed two hours of sleep to be fully functional. And later, he added that he can control whether or not he dreams. Any one of these things should be impossible, but somehow Batman figured out a way to do it.

In this alternate world, the League had been called back into action to keep Lobo safe while the United Planets prepared a trial for his numerous crimes. Understanding that a great many people would see Lobo’s imprisonment as a golden opportunity to seek revenge, the Justice League took Lobo to Apokolips where they believed they could keep him hidden and safe while they wait for the trial to begin.

Of course, keeping watch for intruders wasn’t the only thing they had to be wary of. They also needed to keep an eye on Lobo, who would almost certainly try to escape if given a chance. Superman and Wonder Woman volunteered to keep watch overnight as neither of them actually required sleep to function. The other leaguers happily accepted their offer, even Batman, but he informed them that he could fall asleep within seven seconds and needed only two hours to be fully rested.

It’s an amazing ability really. But it became even more impressive when he revealed that he could shut off his subconscious so he doesn’t dream. Any one of these things should be impossible for a human being to accomplish. The average human adult needs seven to nine hours of sleep to function properly and remain healthy. If what Batman is saying is true, then he should be suffering from constant sleep deprivation and be unable to do anything, much less fight crime at night. Though it certainly explains how he has so much time to patrol Gotham at night and still make the rounds as Bruce Wayne during the day.

And his ability to decide whether he dreams or not is equally incredible. Humans can train themselves to affect or even control their dreams through a practice called lucid dreaming, but shutting off the subconscious entirely is not one of those features. It’s understandable why Batman would want to not have any dreams. He sees so many horrible things on a daily basis that he wouldn’t want them to haunt even his dreams. He deserves a few moments of peace. But it’s hard to understand what kind of training would provide him with these skills. It is Batman though, having total control over how much rest his body needs in order for him to be prepared is absolutely something he would try to attain.
