Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #6 reveals that the tech of a Gotham City villain is instrumental in yet another devious plot.
Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #6, on sale now from DC Comics.
Although the Mad Hatter is often regarded as one of Gotham City’s sillier enemies, his mind controlling tech is not to be taken lightly. Introduced in Batman #49 (by Bill Finger and Lew Sayre Schwartz), Jervis Tetch is a mentally disturbed criminal, obsessed with Lewis Carroll’s novel, Alice in Wonderland. Taking the guise of his literary namesake, the Mad Hatter is well-known for his hat-based crimes, using advanced technology to control minds and spread terror.
Tetch’s mind-control technology has allowed the Hatter to unveil his latest diabolical plan in Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #6 (by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Rick Burchett, Monica Kubina, and Josh Reed). In the issue, Tetch attempts to use his mind control technology to influence an election in hopes of installing the crooked Emerson Mayfield as Gotham’s Mayor.
Political meddling is a far cry from the Hatter’s usual crimes, which are largely inspired by his Alice in Wonderland fantasies. This is a more insidious and sneakier use of his technology with grave stakes for Gotham in the event that the scheme is successful. The Hatter’s involvement is discovered by Barbara Gordon, who is about to confront Tech when she is attacked and knocked unconscious by Mayfield.
The Mad Hatter’s plan in this issue mirrors his role in “Fear State,” currently playing out in the mainstream DC continuity. It was revealed in Batman #115 (by James Tynion IV, Bengal and Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles) that the Scarecrow has been using the Hatter’s mind control technology to break down and destroy Gotham’s collective sanity. While the Mad Hatter has only played a minor part in the events of “Fear State” thus far, his technology has proved instrumental to carrying out the Scarecrow’s master plan. It shows what a villain with real ambition is able to do with the dangerous technology.
This is not the first time that the Mad Hatter has used his mind control tech to bring Gotham to its knees. In Detective Comics #758 – 760, the Hatter forced members of the GCPD to commit crimes on his behalf. This included forcing detectives Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen to rob a bank. If his effort had been more ambitious, the situation could have been much worse.
Silly as he may be, the Mad Hatter has always been a surprisingly dangerous criminal, evolving over the years into something far creepier and stranger than his gimmick suggests. However, his obsession with Alice in Wonderland has tended to stand in the way of his ever posing a real threat to Batman or Gotham City. However, the extent and ambition behind his crimes as of late show just how dangerous the Mad Hatter and his tech can be when he sets his mind to it.
