Batman/Fortnite Mission Goes Sideways Thanks to a DC Villain

[ad_1]

Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point revealed the traitor on the Caped Crusader’s Fortnite team, and it could spell doom for the Dark Knight.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #5, by Donald Mustard, Christos Gage, Christian Duce, John Kalisz and AndWorld Design, on sale now.

Batman’s time in the world of Fortnite hasn’t exactly been easy. When he initially entered the rift above Gotham that took him to the game world’s island, he immediately lost both his ability to speak and all his memories from before entering the rift. Then he had to deal with the world resetting every 22 minutes and lost his one ally, Catwoman, for a time. With the masterminds behind the world of Fortnite sending foes like G.I. Joe‘s Snake Eyes to stop the Dark Knight, it’s clear that Batman needs to watch his back, especially with a traitor on his newly formed team.

The previous issue saw Batman unite with others who escaped Fortnite’s battle royale loop, including Catwoman and well-known DC villain Deathstroke. When one member of the party was killed, it was revealed that one of them had been lying all along. After Fishstick found a device that allowed someone to come through the original rift without losing their memories, it was obvious someone among them was working for whoever is behind the game world.

Proving himself to be the World’s Greatest Detective once again, Batman already deduced the traitor’s identity before reaching the way out of this world — the Zero Point. As they made their way to the Zero Point, Deathstroke asked Batman to use the liquid nitrogen capsules in his utility belt. Having never used them in Fortnite’s world in front of the mercenary, the Dark Knight Detective realized that Deathstroke must have seen them before arriving through the rift. The device Fishstick found belonged to the mercenary, who then killed the unfortunate soul who had made the discovery.

This isn’t the first time the villainous mercenary has betrayed DC’s heroes. All the way back in the 90s Superman crossover event “Panic in the Sky,” Superman recruited Deathstroke to help defend those on the ground when a Brainiac-controlled Warworld invaded. Eventually, the mercenary assassin attacked the Man of Steel, although this was due to Brainiac mind-controlling him rather than any intentional betrayal. However, the same cannot be said for Slade Wilson’s other acts of treachery.

In Infinite Crisis, Deathstroke struck an uneasy alliance with longtime nemesis Nightwing to train his daughter, Rose Wilson. When the elder Wilson learned that Batman’s former partner was teaching Rose the value of heroism, he struck a deal with Nightwing that would have the hero stay away from his daughter if the merciless villain stayed out of Blüdhaven. Deathstroke went back on his word when Alexander Luthor Jr. ordered him to march on the city, leading to the deaths of thousands.

Some of Deathstroke’s biggest betrayals don’t involve him personally, but rather the manipulation of others. Not only did he take control of Damian Wayne’s Robin in an attempt to force him to kill Dick Grayson’s Batman, but he was also the cause of the Teen Titans’ greatest betrayal. “The Judas Contract” saw Deathstroke’s mole on the team, Terra, provide him with all of the Titans’ secret identities. This allowed him to attack them in their civilian lives in a brutal blow to the team both physically and emotionally.

Deathstroke’s duplicitous history doesn’t make it all too surprising then when he betrays Batman a second time in this issue. When everyone else has returned to their homeworlds through the Zero Point, the three characters from the DC Universe need to work together to create a portal that will stay open long enough to allow all of them to go home.

However, Deathstroke reveals he’s had a way home all along and uses a device to return through the Zero Point alone, abandoning Batman and Catwoman. Without a third person, they can’t open a portal long enough for the two of them to leave together. It seems that Deathstroke has fulfilled the role Fortnite’s masterminds assigned him perfectly. Now the two Gotham City vigilantes are stranded with their only hope being to find those who hired the mercenary, and brought them to this strange new world in the first place.
