Batman: DC Reveals the First Thing Catwoman Ever Stole

[ad_1]

Batman/Catwoman just revealed the surprisingly perfect item that became the first thing Catwoman ever stole — and how it ties her to Bruce Wayne.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batman/Catwoman #6, on sale now.

Catwoman has been one of superhero comics’ most prolific thieves ever since she was introduced in 1940’s Batman #1 by Bill Figner, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. She’s stolen countless artifacts, valuables, and impossibly valuable items over the years. But it turns out Selina not only distinctly remembers what she stole first — but she still has it.

Batman/Catwoman #6 by Tom King, Clay Mann, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles reveals the first thing Catwoman ever stole is actually a Christmas ornament — and it not only ties her history as a master thief to the holiday season and to the cats she’s always loved but quietly to Bruce Wayne and the rest of his family.

Batman/Catwoman has been juggling multiple timelines and story-beats, notably including the apparent bond that the Joker and Catwoman share. This extends to the pair meeting up in the aftermath of a fight between Selina and Bruce, with Catwoman nursing a hangover by continuing to drink. When Joker realizes that they’re in the presence of a Christmas Tree from Batman, Joker decides it would be fun to decorate it before he can, seemingly out of spite. While going through the handful of Christmas ornaments that Selina has in her possession, she pulls out one of a chubby orange cat — likely a reference to Garfield. As Selina explains to the Joker, it was one of the ornaments she saw as a young child, growing up in a Gotham orphanage.

Every year, the Waynes would donate a massive Christmas tree, giving the dank setting a flash of color. At nights, Selina would sneak downstairs and sit in front of the tree. Drawn to the orange cat ornament, Selina eventually stole the ornament for herself — deciding she couldn’t stand the idea of it being hidden away for a whole year at a time. Selina even reveals it was the first thing she ever stole — and that even to the present day, she has it in her possession. Looking through the box, she relates more stories to Joker, and realizes eventually that every ornament she owns was one she stole over the years.

It’s a fitting revelation for Catwoman, who has long been established as a thief less for the material gain but more for the thrill of the chase and the power she feels when she’s able to take something that by all rights doesn’t belong to her. The fact that it was from a Christmas tree donated by the Waynes gives it extra significance, tying her first ever minor, insignificant crime in a life almost entirely dedicated to theft to the man who would most often give her trouble — and that she would fall in love with.

The Waynes being such fans of Christmas makes sense given their wealth and luxury, and the idea that they would try to spread some holiday cheer across Gotham’s more troubled areas also tracks. But it also served as a first window into the kind of life Selina liked, and showed the young girl what kind of things she’d need to do to claim it. It’s a minor bond that’s existed in their lives for some time, but is a perfect representation of the hopes people like Bruce Wayne want to inspire in the people of Gotham — and how it actually did serve as a lesson to people like Selina Kyle.
