Batman and Two-Face Fight Their Way Into Mezco One:12 Collective

Mezco Toyz’s latest Golden Age-inspired figures of Batman and Two-Face look like they stepped out of a Dick Sprang panel.

Mezco Toyz has revealed classic versions of Batman and Two-Face as two of its upcoming figures in the One:12 Collective line.

Both toys, revealed as part of the Mezco Con 2021 event running from Oct. 1-3, were posed to deal blows to each other in photos shared by Mezco on Twitter, with looks reminiscent of iconic Golden Age appearances in the ’40s and ’50s. Batman has his classic blue outfit with the beefy build and square jaw popularized by artists like Dick Sprang, while Two-Face wears the half-orange, half-checkered purple suit he wore in his debut story, “The Crimes of Two-Face,” which appeared in 1942’s Detective Comics #66 by Bill Finger and Bob Kane.

While more specific details on the figures remain limited at this time — including the exact comics that Mezco took inspiration from — Twitter users pointed out that the imagery of Batman and Two-Face is evocative of the cover of Book Two of Batman: Two-Face Strikes Twice.

Published in 1993-1994, Batman: Two-Face Strikes Twice was written by Mike W. Barr and had covers by Dick Sprang himself. The title was notable for telling two versions of the same story, both of which pitted Batman against an angry Two-Face trying to disrupt his ex-wife Gilda Dent’s second marriage. One of these stories was a love letter to the Golden Age of comics, with Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson looking like they had stepped out of the ’40s in bold imagery by Eisner-winning artist Joe Staton (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, The Huntress). The other story featured the then-modern Dynamic Duo of Bruce Wayne and Tim Drake, with painted illustrations by Daerick Gross (ExcaliburMurciélaga She-Bat). Both tales had an outlandish trap with Two-Face threatening to crush a tied-up Batman with a giant coin — a homage to the massive penny located within the Batcave, which ironically did not originate from a Two-Face story but rather from an encounter with the often-forgotten C-list villain Penny Plunderer in 1947’s World’s Finest #30.

Aside from Batman and Two-Face, several other figures were revealed during Mezco Con 2021, including an ultra-detailed Doctor Doom. The company’s One:12 Collective line is named for its 1:12 scale figures which encompass a wide variety of licenses, from the Christopher Reeve version of Superman to Peter Parker’s “Night Monkey” stealth suit from Spiderman: Far From Home.
